Pietersen to miss limited-overs leg of England NZ tour

AP, LONDON

Kevin Pietersen has been rested from the limited-overs leg of England’s cricket tour of New Zealand in February.

Meanwhile, Graeme Swann, James Anderson and Jonathan Trott were picked in the 14-man one-day squad yesterday after being rested for the series in India next month.

Pietersen was also not chosen for the five one-dayers in India, as England try to manage the workload of key players.

CHANGES

The 14-man Twenty20 squad has two changes to the side that drew the series with India 1-1 following their last-ball victory in Mumbai on Saturday. Stuart Broad will return from a heel injury to captain England, and fast bowler Steven Finn was recalled.

“Following on from the ODI tour to India, the tour to New Zealand will require players to adapt to different conditions and will prove a real challenge for the squad as we look to continue the progress we have made in limited-overs cricket recently,” England selector Geoff Miller said.

“There are a number of players who we have decided not to select for parts of the competitive program this winter as we look to manage their workloads effectively while ensuring we remain competitive across all formats,” he said.

FRESH

“We feel this is the best way of keeping players as physically and mentally fresh as possible during a demanding 2013 and beyond. This approach also provides an opportunity for talented young players to gain more international experience,” Miller said.

England and New Zealand will play three T20s from Feb. 9, then three one-dayers from Feb. 17. Three Tests follow in March.
