New Zealand rough up Thais, Taiwan spank Philippines

New Zealand won their first game of the 2013 World Baseball Classic Qualifier yesterday afternoon by roughing up Thailand in a 12-2 upset over eight innings at the Sinjhuang Baseball Stadium in New Taipei City to even their record at 1-1.

Leadoff man Alan Schoenberger took the Thai nationals to school with perfect four-for-four hitting on the day. The minor leaguer with the Philadelphia Phillies also drove in two runs, stole two bases and scored four times in what many would consider an “Alan Schoenberger Offensive Clinic.”

Also starring for New Zealand was Boss Moanaroa, who went deep against the Thai pitching with an eighth-inning homer off reliever Adichat Wongvichit to help his team claim a 10-run lead that triggered the mercy rule that ended the game an inning short of the usual nine.

Pocketing the win was starter Fox Rolfe, who kept the favored Thai lineup at bay by allowing a run on two hits over five innings to complement an offense that scored in each of the eight innings played.
