Taiwan’s Wang, Yang victorious in Malaysia, Thailand


Taiwan’s Jimmy Wang advanced to the second round of the Malaysian Open yesterday.

Wang beat Riccardo Ghedin of Italy 6-3, 6-3, maintaining his strong form in a year that has seen him qualify for the main draw at Wimbledon and reach the second round at the US Open.

Igor Sijsling needed only 50 minutes to defeat Malaysia’s top-ranked player Ariez Elyaas Deen Heshaam 6-2, 6-1 at Kuala Lumpur’s Putra Stadium.

Sijsling faces either Feliciano Lopez or Lukas Lacko of Slovakia in the second round.

Vasek Pospisil advanced when eighth seed Jurgen Melzer retired with the Canadian leading 6-4, 2-0.

In the other first-round match played yesterday, Michael Yani of the US defeated fellow countryman Brian Baker 6-3, 7-6 (7/4).



Taiwan’s Yang Tsung-hua battled his way into the first round of the Thailand Open yesterday, rallying to defeat Germany’s Mischa Zverev 4-6, 6-0, 7-5 in the final round of qualifying in Bangkok.

Later yesterday, Philipp Petzschner advanced to the second round, cruising past Peerakiat Siriluethaiwattana of Thailand 6-1, 6-2.

The 107th-ranked Petzschner took less than an hour to win the only first-round match of the day.

The four highest seeds — Janko Tipsarevic, Richard Gasquet, Milos Raonic and Gilles Simon — received byes in the first round.
