Yani Tseng eyeing first win in five months

Staff writer, with CNA

World No. 1 Yani Tseng of Taiwan is seeking her first victory in five months at the LPGA Canadian Open, which started in Vancouver yesterday.

Tseng has not won a tourney since March 25 at the Kia Classic in San Diego, California, her third in five LPGA starts this year.

Since then, she has entered a slump, missing the cut in three of her five previous events.

She managed to tie for 50th at the US Women’s Open early last month and finished 11th in the Safeway Classic last week in Portland, Oregon, her highest showing in her last seven events.

The long drought has caused her to forget her smile on the green, Tseng said, adding that she was encouraged by her improved performance last week.

This may be a good start, because there are a lot of matches ahead, Tseng said.

Meanwhile, she hailed a decision by Augusta National Golf Club to allow women members, for the first time in its 80-year history.

“I just feel very happy that they finally have let ladies be members,” Tseng said. “I’m looking forward to playing there if I can. I’ve never played there, so I think it’s very interesting.”
