Top-seeded Novak Djokovic won his second straight Rogers Cup title and third overall, beating Richard Gasquet 6-3, 6-2 on Sunday.
The Serbian, also the tournament winner in 2007, won for the first time since Miami four months ago.
Djokovic was coming off a third-place finish in the Olympics.
“The losses I had in the Olympic Games gave me even more desire to come here and perform my best and try to win a title,” Djokovic said. “I am very happy to be in this position. I truly did not expect to win this tournament after the emotional losses in the Olympics. I really took it hard and tried to bounce back and recover. And I’ve done great, I have to say.”
Gasquet, the 14th-seed Frenchman, was making his first Masters 1000 finals appearance since losing to Roger Federer in Toronto in 2006.
“It was a long time since I played a final at this kind of tournament,” Gasquet said. “It’s tough when you have Djokovic in front of you and are not playing your best tennis. It’s very difficult. He played much better than me for sure.”
The final was played in clear conditions at Rexall Centre after a week of frustrating rain disruptions. Djokovic, among other players, was forced to play twice on Friday and had his semi-final against countryman Janko Tipsarevic delayed twice and pushed into late on Saturday night.
“The rain delay and interruptions weren’t making my life easy that’s for sure,” Djokovic said.
US brothers Bob and Mike Bryan, fresh from winning the Olympic gold medal, won the doubles title with a 6-1, 4-6 (12-10) victory over Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez.
In the women’s event at Montreal, 10th-seeded Li Na rallied to beat 16th-seeded Lucie Safarova 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 to advance to yesterday’s final.
Na will face fifth-seeded Petra Kvitova, a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 winner over seventh-seeded Caroline Wozniacki.
Safarova led 5-1 in the final set, before Li rallied to win the error-filled match.
“There was nothing on my mind, you couldn’t think too much on the court,” said Li, last year’s French Open champion. “I just told myself to play point-by-point, play the ball back in the court and see how it’s going. This is tennis. You put the ball back in the court, and over the net. It looks easy, but sometimes I couldn’t do it.”
The 30-year-old Li has a six-match winning streak against Safarova dating to 2009.
“Closing a match is always a little bit of a nervous moment,” Safarova said. “I was thinking that she made a lot of mistakes in the games before, and I just didn’t put enough pressure and she used that situation to turn it over. Then she started serving well and playing better and it just slipped away.”
Revelations of positive doping tests for nearly two dozen Chinese swimmers that went unpunished sparked an intense flurry of accusations and legal threats between the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the head of the US drug-fighting organization, who has long been one of WADA’s fiercest critics. WADA on Saturday said it was turning to legal counsel to address a statement released by US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) CEO Travis Tygart, who said WADA and anti-doping authorities in China swept positive tests “under the carpet by failing to fairly and evenly follow the global rules that apply to everyone else in the world.” The
Taiwanese judoka Yang Yung-wei on Saturday won silver in the men’s under-60kg category at the Asian Judo Championships in Hong Kong. Nicknamed the “judo heartthrob” in Taiwan, the Olympic silver-medalist missed out on his first Asian Championships gold when he lost to Japanese judoka Taiki Nakamura in the finals. Yang defeated three opponents on Saturday to reach the final after receiving a bye through the round of 32. He first topped Laotian Soukphaxay Sithisane in the round of 16 with two seoi nage (over-the-shoulder throws), then ousted Indian Vijay Kumar Yadav in the quarter-finals with his signature ude hishigi sankaku gatame (triangular armlock). He
Rafael Nadal on Wednesday said the upcoming French Open would be the moment to “give everything and die” on the court after his comeback from injury in Barcelona was curtailed by Alex de Minaur. The 22-time Grand Slam title winner, back playing this week after three months on the sidelines, battled well, but eventually crumbled 7-5, 6-1 against the world No. 11 from Australia in the second round. Nadal, 37, who missed virtually all of last season, is hoping to compete at the French Open next month where he is the record 14-time champion. The Spaniard said the clash with De Minaur was
RALLY: It was only the second time the Taiwanese has partnered with Kudermetova, and the match seemed tight until they won seven points in a row to take the last set 10-2 Taiwan’s Chan Hao-ching and Russia’s Veronika Kudermetova on Sunday won the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix women’s doubles final in Stuttgart, Germany. The pair defeated Norway’s Ulrikke Eikeri and Estonia’s Ingrid Neel 4-6, 6-3, 10-2 in a tightly contested match at the WTA 500 tournament. Chan and Kudermetova fell 4-6 in the first set after having their serve broken three times, although they played increasingly well. They fought back in the second set and managed to break their opponents’ serve in the eighth game to triumph 6-3. In the tiebreaker, Chan and Kudermetova took a 3-0 lead before their opponents clawed back two points, but
