LeBron James provided the big plays down the stretch to help the US escape with a 99-94 win over Lithuania and remain unbeaten — barely — in the men’s Olympic basketball tournament on Saturday.
There was no such escape for Spain, silver medalists four years ago in Beijing and seen by many as a likely challenger for the star-studded US team in the final.
Russia’s 77-74 victory over the two-time European champions meant that — and avoided a potential matchup with the heavily favored US until the gold medal game.

Timofey Mozgov made the tiebreaking dunk with 18 seconds left and Vitaliy Fridzon, the hero of Russia’s victory over Brazil on Thursday, made the clinching free throws with 4.8 seconds left after Russia had charged back from an 18-point deficit. Fridzon scored 24 points.
“We won the group today,” Russia coach David Blatt said. “It’s a good feeling. I’d hoped that we would finish in one of the top three spots, to be honest with you, just so that we could avoid the American team in the quarters.”
Russia did even better. Any meeting now — assuming the US win Group A as expected — will not happen until Sunday in a rematch of the 1972 title game.
“That would be interesting, wouldn’t it? It’s a long way, though, but again, it’d be interesting,” US-born Blatt said.
It was Spain’s first loss at the Olympics to a team other than the US since 2000 and they now risk having to meet the US in the semi-finals.
Two days after running and gunning to a record-shattering 83-point win over Nigeria, the US had to come back in the fourth quarter over a fearless Lithuania team, who had the world’s best squad in serious trouble until the closing minutes.
James scored nine of his 20 points in the final four minutes for the US, Carmelo Anthony adding 20 and Kevin Durant 16, while Chris Paul got seven rebounds, six assists and four of the US’ 17 steals.
Linas Kleiza scored 25 to lead Lithuania, who were up 84-82 with 5 minutes, 50 seconds to play. After the US took a three-point lead, Lithuania would not go away and pulled within 87-86 on Darius Songaila’s bucket with 4:12 left.
That is when James, who has already won an MVP trophy and NBA title this year, took control.
He knocked down a three-pointer from the top of the key and after Paul stole the inbound pass, James took a pass down the right side and delivered one of his trademark dunks, a basket that brought the US players off the bench and seemed to restore world basketball order.
After a basket by Deron Williams — on a possession Paul kept alive with an offensive rebound — James followed a Lithuania turnover with a left-handed layup, giving the US a 97-88 lead.
The US remained unbeaten — though no longer untested.
“You want to get tested. The best teams want to be tested. We love the competition,” James said.
Anton Ponkrashov scored 14 points and Mozgov had 12 for Russia, who trailed 20-2 in the first quarter and still trailed by nine with less than 4:30 left.
Pau Gasol scored 20 points for Spain (3-1), but missed the first of two free throws with 5.2 seconds left when his team trailed by two.
Marc Gasol and Rudy Fernandez each had 10 for Spain in the first meeting since Russia stunned the then-reigning world champions 60-59 in the 2007 European championship game.
Spain used star guard Juan Carlos Navarro for just the second time in the Olympics as he recovers from a left-foot injury.
Russia did not even qualify for the Olympics until a last-chance tournament last month.
Marquinhos Vieira scored 14 points and Leandro Barbosa added 13 for Brazil in their 98-59 rout of China to reach the quarter-finals from Group B.
Brazil are 3-1 in Group B, while China fell to 0-4.
Argentina improved to 3-1 in Group A by beating winless Nigeria 93-79 behind 22 points from Luis Scola.
Patty Mills scored a tournament-high 39 points as Australia beat Britain 106-75 to earn a spot in the quarter-finals.
The San Antonio Spurs guard had 15 points in the third quarter to spark Australia’s comeback. Matt Dellavedova made all three of his three-point attempts in the period as Australia rallied from a 10-point halftime deficit.
Britain, who led by as many as 15 points in the third, trailed 66-60 at the end of the quarter.
Australia (2-2) started the fourth with an 18-0 run, which included a pair of Mills’ three-pointers.
Joel Freeland had 16 points for Britain, now 0-4 on their Olympic debut.
In the early game, Tony Parker scored 22 points and Nicolas Batum added 19 as France beat Tunisia 73-69 for their third straight victory.
Four-time NBA all-star DeMarcus Cousins arrived in Taiwan with his family early yesterday to finish his renewed contract with the Taiwan Beer Leopards in the T1 League. Cousins initially played a four-game contract with the Leopards in January. On March 18, the Taoyuan-based team announced that Cousins had renewed his contract. “Hi what’s up Leopard fans, I’m back. I’m excited to be back and can’t wait to join the team,” Cousins said in a video posted on the Leopard’s Facebook page. “Most of all, can’t wait to see you guys, the fans, next weekend. So make sure you come out and support the Beer
Revelations of positive doping tests for nearly two dozen Chinese swimmers that went unpunished sparked an intense flurry of accusations and legal threats between the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the head of the US drug-fighting organization, who has long been one of WADA’s fiercest critics. WADA on Saturday said it was turning to legal counsel to address a statement released by US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) CEO Travis Tygart, who said WADA and anti-doping authorities in China swept positive tests “under the carpet by failing to fairly and evenly follow the global rules that apply to everyone else in the world.” The
Taiwanese judoka Yang Yung-wei on Saturday won silver in the men’s under-60kg category at the Asian Judo Championships in Hong Kong. Nicknamed the “judo heartthrob” in Taiwan, the Olympic silver-medalist missed out on his first Asian Championships gold when he lost to Japanese judoka Taiki Nakamura in the finals. Yang defeated three opponents on Saturday to reach the final after receiving a bye through the round of 32. He first topped Laotian Soukphaxay Sithisane in the round of 16 with two seoi nage (over-the-shoulder throws), then ousted Indian Vijay Kumar Yadav in the quarter-finals with his signature ude hishigi sankaku gatame (triangular armlock). He
Rafael Nadal on Wednesday said the upcoming French Open would be the moment to “give everything and die” on the court after his comeback from injury in Barcelona was curtailed by Alex de Minaur. The 22-time Grand Slam title winner, back playing this week after three months on the sidelines, battled well, but eventually crumbled 7-5, 6-1 against the world No. 11 from Australia in the second round. Nadal, 37, who missed virtually all of last season, is hoping to compete at the French Open next month where he is the record 14-time champion. The Spaniard said the clash with De Minaur was
