AMERICAN LEAGUE
New York’s Mark Teixeira hit a two-run single in a five-run first inning and a two-run triple in the seventh as the Yankees beat the Boston Red Sox 10-8 in the American League on Friday.
Alex Rodriguez had three hits and Curtis Granderson scored three times for the Yankees, who improved to 3-0 against Boston this year.
It was a wild start to the game, with Boston immediately replying to New York’s first inning, leaving the game tied 5-5 after the first frame.
New York’s Boone Logan (4-0) wound up with the win and Andrew Miller (2-1) took the loss.
ORIOLES 3, ANGELS 2
In Anaheim, Steve Pearce hit a three-run homer, and that proved enough for Baltimore to edge Los Angeles.
Orioles starter Miguel Gonzalez (1-0) pitched seven stellar innings in his first career victory, yielding one run and striking out six.
Angels starter C.J. Wilson (9-5) allowed four hits over seven innings in his final start before his All-Star game appearance, but the Angels lost with him on the mound for the first time in nine starts.
WHITE SOX 4, BLUE JAYS 2
In Chicago, Jake Peavy pitched one-run ball into the eighth inning, notching his first victory in five weeks and leading Chicago over Toronto.
The White Sox finally gave Peavy some run support. He’d been 0-4 in his previous four starts — throwing two complete games — when Chicago scored only two runs total during those losses.
Peavy (7-5) struck out seven, including the leadoff hitter in the eighth inning before leaving after 115 pitches.
A.J. Pierzynski homered for the White Sox, who won their fourth straight.
RAYS 10, INDIANS 3
In Cleveland, Luke Scott snapped his team-record hitless streak with a two-run homer as Tampa Bay broke out of their slump by routing Cleveland.
Scott was 0 for 41 since June 1 until connecting against Justin Masterson (5-8) in a six-run fifth inning. Tampa Bay had scored more than four runs in a game only once in their previous 11 contests.
Rays starter Alex Cobb (4-5) overcame a shaky start to pitch six innings.
TWINS 5, RANGERS 1
In Arlington, Texas, Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau drove in two runs each for Minnesota in the win over Texas.
Twins starter Francisco Liriano (3-7) allowed only one run with six strikeouts in 6-2/3 innings.
Minnesota touched Rangers rookie Martin Perez (1-1) for four runs in first four innings, but two were unearned after a missed popup.
In other AL play, it was:
‧ Tigers 4, Royals 2
‧ Athletics 4, Mariners 1
NATIONAL LEAGUE
AP, PHOENIX
San Francisco’s Melky Cabrera hit a homer and Ryan Theriot drove in two runs as the Giants edged the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-5 on Friday in the National League.
San Francisco starter Barry Zito (7-6) survived five eventful innings as the Giants snapped a three-game losing streak.
Pittsburgh starter Erik Bedard (4-10) endured another short outing, failing to get through the fourth inning as the Pirates’ four-game winning streak ended.
DIAMONDBACKS 5, DODGERS 3
In Phoenix, Justin Upton broke out of a slump with a key two-run triple as Arizona rallied to beat Los Angeles and snap a six-game losing streak.
Diamondbacks starter Josh Collmenter (1-2) scattered six hits over six innings, striking out six.
Dodgers starter Clayton Kershaw (6-5) allowed one hit through five innings but ended up yielding five runs over 5-1/3 innings. Los Angeles suffered their first loss in four games.
MARLINS 3, CARDINALS 2
In St Louis, Ricky Nolasco allowed one unearned run in six innings, leading Miami to a tight win over St Louis.
Nolasco (8-6) got the big outs when it counted against the Cardinals, holding them to 1 for 11 with runners in scoring position.
BRAVES 5, PHILLIES 0
In Philadelphia, Brian McCann’s grand slam was enough to give Atlanta victory over a Philadelphia team held scoreless despite Ryan Howard’s belated season debut.
Howard doubled in his first at-bat and was 2 for 4 in his first game since rupturing his left Achilles tendon in a playoff game last season.
However, even with their regulars together for the first time, the struggling Phillies generated nothing on offense. The five-time defending NL East champions are a season-worst 11 games under .500.
Braves starter Tim Hudson (7-4) pitched seven scoreless innings, as did Phillies starter Kyle Kendrick. Antonio Bastardo (2-3) replaced Kendrick to start the eighth and immediately ran into trouble.
In other NL play, it was:
‧ Rockies 5, Nationals 1
‧ Reds 6, Padres 0
‧ Cubs 8, Mets 7
‧ Brewers 7, Astros 1
Four-time NBA all-star DeMarcus Cousins arrived in Taiwan with his family early yesterday to finish his renewed contract with the Taiwan Beer Leopards in the T1 League. Cousins initially played a four-game contract with the Leopards in January. On March 18, the Taoyuan-based team announced that Cousins had renewed his contract. “Hi what’s up Leopard fans, I’m back. Revelations of positive doping tests for nearly two dozen Chinese swimmers that went unpunished sparked an intense flurry of accusations and legal threats between the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the head of the US drug-fighting organization, who has long been one of WADA’s fiercest critics. WADA on Saturday said it was turning to legal counsel to address a statement released by US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) CEO Travis Tygart, who said WADA and anti-doping authorities in China swept positive tests “under the carpet by failing to fairly and evenly follow the global rules that apply to everyone else in the world.” The
Taiwanese judoka Yang Yung-wei on Saturday won silver in the men’s under-60kg category at the Asian Judo Championships in Hong Kong. Nicknamed the “judo heartthrob” in Taiwan, the Olympic silver-medalist missed out on his first Asian Championships gold when he lost to Japanese judoka Taiki Nakamura in the finals. Yang defeated three opponents on Saturday to reach the final after receiving a bye through the round of 32. He first topped Laotian Soukphaxay Sithisane in the round of 16 with two seoi nage (over-the-shoulder throws), then ousted Indian Vijay Kumar Yadav in the quarter-finals with his signature ude hishigi sankaku gatame (triangular armlock). He
Rafael Nadal on Wednesday said the upcoming French Open would be the moment to “give everything and die” on the court after his comeback from injury in Barcelona was curtailed by Alex de Minaur. The 22-time Grand Slam title winner, back playing this week after three months on the sidelines, battled well, but eventually crumbled 7-5, 6-1 against the world No. 11 from Australia in the second round. Nadal, 37, who missed virtually all of last season, is hoping to compete at the French Open next month where he is the record 14-time champion. The Spaniard said the clash with De Minaur was
