Jamie McGinn forced overtime by scoring with just two seconds left in regulation, while Peter Mueller netted the lone shootout goal in the Colorado Avalanche’s 5-4 win over the Buffalo Sabres on Wednesday.
McGinn scored twice, Gabriel Landeskog had a goal and assist, and David Jones scored for the Avalanche (38-30-4), who vaulted out of a four-way tie for eighth place in the Western Conference to sixth.
Semyon Varlamov made 20 saves through overtime and stopped all three of Buffalo’s shootout attempts to improve to 8-0 in the tiebreaker.
Rookie Marcus Foligno scored twice for Buffalo (33-29-9), who inched within three points of eighth-placed Washington in the East.
Drew Stafford had a goal and two assists, Tyler Ennis had three assists and Alexander Sulzer also scored for the Sabres.
CANADIENS 3, SENATORS 2, SO
In Montreal, David Desharnais scored in regulation and in a shootout to lift Montreal past Ottawa.
Desharnais had the only goal in the shootout, while Canadiens goalie Carey Price stopped all three Senators attempts.
Erik Cole also scored for Montreal (28-32-11), 3-0-1 in their past four games.
Colin Greening and Erik Karlsson had goals for the Senators (36-25-10), who are one point behind Northeast Division-leading Boston. The Bruins have two games in hand.

In Winnipeg, Manitoba, Andrew Ladd scored twice to help Winnipeg snap Dallas’ six-game winning streak.
Nik Antropov, Evander Kane and Eric Fehr also scored for the Jets, who moved four points behind Washington for the eighth and last playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Loui Eriksson had both goals for Dallas.

In Anaheim, California, Jonas Hiller made 23 saves in his 15th career shutout and rookie Kyle Palmieri scored two goals as Anaheim kept their faint playoff hopes flickering.
Teemu Selanne scored his 660th career goal and Bobby Ryan also scored as the Ducks shut out the Red Wings at home for the first time in Anaheim’s franchise history.
The Ducks also snapped a three-game skid with a thrashing of injury-depleted Detroit, who have lost five of six.

In Edmonton, Alberta, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins had a goal and an assist, while Devan Dubnyk stopped 22 shots for his second shutout of the season as Edmonton snapped a three-game losing streak.
Taylor Hall and Linus Omark also scored as the Oilers won for just the second time in eight games (2-5-1). Edmonton improved their total to 61 points, ahead of only league-worst Columbus (51).
Curtis Sanford stopped 24 shots as the Blue Jackets lost their third straight.

In Vancouver, Antoine Vermette had a goal and added two assists as Phoenix held on to beat Vancouver.
The Coyotes won for the second time in eight games after overcoming an early 2-0 deficit against a rejuvenated Canucks squad that featured several different forward and defense combinations.
Rostislav Klesla, Shane Doan, Oliver Ekman-Larson and Gilbert Brule also scored for Phoenix, while Ray Whitney had three assists.
The seventh-placed Coyotes increased their lead to three points over the San Jose Sharks in the Western Conference.
Alex Burrows, Ryan Kesler, David Booth and Dan Hamhuis scored for the Canucks, who have lost six of eight.
