Olympique de Marseille showed the gulf in class in a 3-1 win over amateur side Bourg-Peronnas to reach the French Cup quarter-finals on Wednesday, while Paris Saint-Germain needed Nene’s clinical finish to edge Dijon FCO 1-0.
Marseille forward Brandao opened the scoring from close range in the 28th minute and he doubled the lead in the 45th. Brandao has five goals in six matches since returning to Marseille after a loan spell at Brazilian club Gremio.
Ghana forward Jordan Ayew made it 3-0 with a low drive in the 54th minute. Ousmane Diaby scored a consolation goal for Bourg-Peronnas in the 78th.
Brazilian midfielder Nene saved PSG from a lackluster performance by curling home the winner from a tight angle in the 15th minute.
Bourg-Peronnas almost caught the hosts off guard in the opening minutes when striker Julio Tavares raced down the right flank on a counterattack to fire over the bar.
Marseille gradually took control and Brandao finally converted the dominance into a lead by beating goalkeeper Sebastien Callamand to the ball to flick home a cross from Cesar Azpilicueta.
Marseille added the second on the stroke of halftime. Morgan Amalfitano played Brandao in with a side-footed pass and he beat Callamand with a low strike.
Brandao could have scored a hat-trick in the first half, but his header from a corner bounced off the bar in the 42nd minute.
Substitute Ayew fired home from the edge of the box to make it 3-0.
In Bourg-Peronnas’ lone chance of the second half, leftback Amar Ben Melouka took a free-kick that hit the Marseille wall. Diaby pounced on the loose ball to shoot past goalkeeper Gennaro Bracigliano for the consolation.
