Not even the NHL record books can stop the red-hot Detroit Red Wings as the league’s top team set a new mark with their 21st consecutive home victory in a 3-1 win over the Dallas Stars on Tuesday.
The Red Wings broke their tie with the 1929-1930 Boston Bruins and the 1975-1976 Philadelphia Flyers for most consecutive wins on home ice.
The Joe Louis Arena crowd stayed behind to give their team a standing ovation for a sensational streak that has not seen the team lose at home in more than three months.

“We’re thrilled this has happened for our team,” Wings coach Mike Babcock told reporters.
“I think it’s really good for our logo, it’s really good for our ownership, our team. I’m proud of the guys. They’ve worked hard and now let’s get on with it,” he said.
Goaltender Joey MacDonald, who has replaced injured starter Jimmy Howard, made 20 saves and came within 33 seconds of recording a shutout, but surrendered a late score to Dallas’ Adam Burish.
Detroit dominated the first period, where they scored twice thanks to Henrik Zetterberg and Brad Stuart, and went ahead 3-0 when Jiri Hudler netted a shot late in the third.
The league-leading Red Wings (39-17-2) completed a four-game regular season sweep over the Stars with the win.
Kari Lehtonen made 34 saves for Dallas (28-25-2) in their third straight loss.
The Stars are currently outside of the Western Conference playoff picture and more than 20 points behind Detroit, but they still could appreciate what the Red Wings had accomplished with their record.
“It’s an impressive record,” Burish said. “This isn’t the ’70s. You can’t show up at the rink and say: ‘We’re going to cruise through this one.’ The competition level in this league from top to bottom is pretty good.”
RANGERS 3, BRUINS 0
In Boston, the New York Rangers opened their NHL Eastern Conference lead over nearest rivals Boston to nine points with a 3-0 road win at the Bruins on Tuesday.

Ryan Callahan scored for the sixth time in four games, and Ryan McDonagh and Artem Anisimov also had goals for the Rangers, who won despite being outshot 42-20.
Lundqvist recorded his 42nd career shutout and is 18-5-2 against the Bruins in his career.
PREDATORS 3, BLACKHAWKS 2

In Buffalo, Ilya Kovalchuk had three goals and an assist to power New Jersey past Buffalo.
Martin Brodeur stopped 29 shots, while Petr Sykora also netted for the Devils, who extended their road-winning streak to a season-best five games.

Jason Pominville scored for the Sabres.
FLAMES 5, MAPLE LEAFS 1
In Calgary, Miikka Kiprusoff made 41 saves as Calgary routed Toronto.
Alex Tanguay had a goal and two assists, Paul Byron scored on a penalty shot in the second period and Olli Jokinen, Jarome Iginla and Blake Comeau added goals for the Flames.
Calgary are unbeaten in regulation in six games, moving within one point of eighth-placed Phoenix in the Western Conference playoff race.
Tyler Bozak scored for the Maple Leafs, who have lost four straight and are clinging to eighth place in the Eastern Conference — one point ahead of Washington.
SENATORS 4, LIGHTNING 0
In Tampa, Jason Spezza had three goals and an assist in Ottawa’s win over Tampa Bay.
After Erik Karlsson opened the scoring, Spezza made it 2-0 in the second, 3-0 in the third and completed his hat-trick with a later empty-netter.
Senators goalie Craig Anderson made 28 saves and is 3-0 against the Lightning this season.
BLUE JACKETS 2, BLUES 1
In Columbus, Derek Dorsett’s third-period goal lifted Columbus over St Louis.
A potential tying goal by St Louis with 1.8 seconds left was disallowed after a lengthy review, which showed the Blues’ David Perron falling on top of the prone Blue Jackets goalie and then shoving the puck into the net.
James Wisniewski scored for Columbus, while David Backes netted for St Louis, which had a four-game winning streak snapped.
Tuesday’s other results:
‧ Islanders 3, Jets 1
‧ Ducks 2, Wild 1
US track and field athletes have about four dozen pieces to choose from when assembling their uniforms at the Olympics. The one grabbing the most attention is a high-cut leotard that barely covers the bikini line and has triggered debate between those who think it is sexist and others who say they do not need the Internet to make sure they have good uniforms. Among those critical or laughing at the uniforms included Paralympian Femita Ayanbeku, sprinter Britton Wilson and even athletes from other countries such as Britain’s Abigail Irozuru, who wrote on social media: “Was ANY female athlete consulted in
Four-time NBA all-star DeMarcus Cousins arrived in Taiwan with his family early yesterday to finish his renewed contract with the Taiwan Beer Leopards in the T1 League. Cousins initially played a four-game contract with the Leopards in January. On March 18, the Taoyuan-based team announced that Cousins had renewed his contract. “Hi what’s up Leopard fans, I’m back. I’m excited to be back and can’t wait to join the team,” Cousins said in a video posted on the Leopard’s Facebook page. “Most of all, can’t wait to see you guys, the fans, next weekend. So make sure you come out and support the Beer
Former US Masters champion Zach Johnson was left embarrassed after a foul-mouthed response to ironic cheers from spectators after a triple bogey at Augusta National on Friday. Johnson, the 2007 Masters winner, missed the cut after his three-over-par round of 75 left him on seven-over 151 for 36 holes, his six on the par-three 12th playing a big role in his downfall. Television footage showed Johnson reacting to sarcastic cheers and applause when he tapped in for the triple bogey by yelling: “Oh fuck off.” Such a response would be considered bad form in any golf tournament, but is particularly out of keeping
The sacred flame for the Paris Olympics was lit yesterday in Olympia, Greece, the birthplace of the ancient Games, in a ceremony inspired by antiquity and marked by messages of hope amid multiple global crises. “In ancient times, the Olympic Games brought together the Greek city states, even — and in particular — during times of war and conflict,” International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach said. “Today, the Olympic Games are the only event that brings the entire world together in peaceful competition. Then as now, the Olympic athletes are sending this powerful message — yes, it is possible to compete fiercely
