Black Cats maintain revival under new boss Martin O’Neill

AP, Wigan, England

Sunderland maintained their revival under Martin O’Neill by moving into the top half of the English Premier League standings with a 4-1 win over Wigan Athletic on Tuesday.

Following the shock 1-0 win over league leaders Manchester City last Sunday, Sunderland won their fourth match from six since O’Neill took over as manager from Steve Bruce.

Wigan, without suspended captain Gary Caldwell, dominated the first half, but they hit the post twice, and Sunderland led into halftime thanks to Craig Gardner’s goal from a free-kick 30m out.

James McClean made it 2-0, before Hugo Rodallega halved the deficit, but Sunderland finished strongly with goals by Stephane Sessegnon and David Vaughan.
