Fernandez ends Israel work

French coach Luis Fernandez confirmed on Wednesday he will end his collaboration with the Israeli national team after ultimately failing to steer them to Euro 2012. Fernandez’s contract will expire in the coming days and the former Paris Saint Germain handler — who said he has received an offer from Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua — said soccer was currently not top of his agenda. “I’m at the end of my [Israel] contract and I have no desire to go on,” Fernandez told RMC radio. “I can’t see myself taking over a club in the coming weeks either, that’s a certainty ... I’ve spoken with the president of the federation and conducted a debriefing of what we’ve done over the past 18 months.” He added: “To finish third in our qualifying group behind Greece and Croatia is not too bad with the young team we had. After that, we had a few things to say to each other. We can’t work together.”

Suarez charged over gesture

Liverpool striker Luis Suarez has been charged with improper conduct during Monday’s English Premier League defeat by Fulham, the Football Association (FA) said on Wednesday. Uruguay forward Suarez was charged, the FA said, “in relation to an alleged gesture made towards the Fulham fans at the end of the fixture.” Suarez has until Monday to respond to the charge. Liverpool were also were hit with a separate charge of failing to ensure their players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion, following the sending off of midfielder Jay Spearing in the same match at Craven Cottage. Fulham won 1-0 thanks to a late Clint Dempsey goal after Liverpool had been reduced to 10 men. Suarez, who was charged by the FA in November with racially abusing Manchester United’s Patrice Evra, had a goal disallowed and also felt he should have had a penalty.
