Mario Gomez and Franck Ribery scored in a labored 2-1 win for Bayern Munich over bottom side Augsburg in a Bavarian derby on Sunday, moving their side five points clear in the Bundesliga.
“There are no easy games,” Bayern coach Jupp Heynckes said.
Gomez scored his Bundesliga-leading 13th goal of the season with a header from close range in the 15th minute when he was well placed to meet Mohamed Amsif’s save from Daniel van Buyten’s header.

Ribery twisted inside Dominik Reinhardt before slotting past the helpless Amsif to make it 2-0 in the 28th minute.
Hajime Hosogai pulled one back in the 59th minute when Bayern failed to clear a corner, the ball falling kindly for the Japan midfielder. David Alaba’s desperate lunge failed to stop the ball crossing the line.
Bayern missed Bastian Schweinsteiger, who broke his collarbone in Wednesday’s 3-2 Champions League win over Napoli and only Manuel Neuer prevented Augsburg from equalizing in the 83rd minute with a great reflex save from Edmond Kapllani.
“Basti is of course an incredibly important player for us, but it’s our job to compensate for this loss and David Alaba did his job well,” Bayern midfielder Toni Kroos said after his 100th Bundesliga appearance.
In a nervous finish for the league leaders, Anatoliy Tymoshchuk received a straight red card for raising his foot in a tackle on Baier in stoppage-time.
Earlier, Finland striker Teemu Pukki scored twice in his first Bundesliga start to salvage a 2-2 draw for Schalke 04 at Hannover 96.
Pukki opened the scoring in the 26th minute and tied the game in the 73rd, after an own-goal from Kyriakos Papadopoulos and Mohammed Abdellaoue’s header had given Hannover the lead.
“Schalke were the better team in the end, with two good chances,” Hannover coach Mirko Slomka said. “It’s not good that we’re conceding so many chances. That didn’t please me at all.”
Schalke missed the chance to go second and dropped to fifth, three points ahead of Hannover.
Klaas Jan Huntelaar failed to recover from a broken nose sustained in the Europa League on Thursday, giving Pukki his opportunity in the Dutchman’s place.
The 21-year-old outpaced Karim Haggui for Christian Fuchs’ pass forward for his first Bundesliga goal, taking it past the outrushing Ron-Robert Zieler with his first touch and slotting into the empty net.
Hannover equalized three minutes later when Papadopoulos’ attempted clearance of Lars Pander’s free-kick ended up in his own net.
Abdellaoue was denied a penalty before the interval when he went down under Papadopoulos’ challenge and Pukki’s shot whizzed by the post in the 57th minute, moments before Didier Ya Konan went just as close at the other end.
Abdellaoue scored two minutes later when Jan Schlaudraff crossed brilliantly with the outside of his foot for the Norway striker to head in his eighth goal of the season.
Pukki scored his second from a narrow angle after a great run from Jefferson Farfan, beating Zieler with a powerful shot across goal.
“In the end we had so many chances to score the winner, but it’s still a good result against Hannover,” Pukki said. “We believe we can [reach the Champions League]. We can go far this season.”
Four-time NBA all-star DeMarcus Cousins arrived in Taiwan with his family early yesterday to finish his renewed contract with the Taiwan Beer Leopards in the T1 League. Cousins initially played a four-game contract with the Leopards in January. On March 18, the Taoyuan-based team announced that Cousins had renewed his contract. “Hi what’s up Leopard fans, I’m back. I’m excited to be back and can’t wait to join the team,” Cousins said in a video posted on the Leopard’s Facebook page. “Most of all, can’t wait to see you guys, the fans, next weekend. So make sure you come out and support the Beer
Revelations of positive doping tests for nearly two dozen Chinese swimmers that went unpunished sparked an intense flurry of accusations and legal threats between the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the head of the US drug-fighting organization, who has long been one of WADA’s fiercest critics. WADA on Saturday said it was turning to legal counsel to address a statement released by US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) CEO Travis Tygart, who said WADA and anti-doping authorities in China swept positive tests “under the carpet by failing to fairly and evenly follow the global rules that apply to everyone else in the world.” The
Taiwanese judoka Yang Yung-wei on Saturday won silver in the men’s under-60kg category at the Asian Judo Championships in Hong Kong. Nicknamed the “judo heartthrob” in Taiwan, the Olympic silver-medalist missed out on his first Asian Championships gold when he lost to Japanese judoka Taiki Nakamura in the finals. Yang defeated three opponents on Saturday to reach the final after receiving a bye through the round of 32. He first topped Laotian Soukphaxay Sithisane in the round of 16 with two seoi nage (over-the-shoulder throws), then ousted Indian Vijay Kumar Yadav in the quarter-finals with his signature ude hishigi sankaku gatame (triangular armlock). He
Rafael Nadal on Wednesday said the upcoming French Open would be the moment to “give everything and die” on the court after his comeback from injury in Barcelona was curtailed by Alex de Minaur. The 22-time Grand Slam title winner, back playing this week after three months on the sidelines, battled well, but eventually crumbled 7-5, 6-1 against the world No. 11 from Australia in the second round. Nadal, 37, who missed virtually all of last season, is hoping to compete at the French Open next month where he is the record 14-time champion. The Spaniard said the clash with De Minaur was
