NHL: Coyotes survive a third-period rally to sink the Ducks


The Phoenix Coyotes netted three goals in a three-minute blitz and survived a late fightback to edge Anaheim 5-4 on Sunday.

Boyd Gordon, Lauri Korpikoski and Keith Yandle netted consecutive goals to propel the Coyotes (3-3-1) 5-2 clear in the second period.

Anaheim rallied in the third with a goal by Kurtis Foster and Ryan Getzlaf’s second score after 18 minutes, 52 seconds briefly raised the Ducks’ hopes of saving the game, before the clock ran down.

Phoenix goaltender Mike Smith finished with 29 saves and held firm in the final minute to secure the win.

The Coyotes had managed just two goals in their previous two contests, but Martin Hanzal scored twice in the first period to give Phoenix a strong start.

Lubomir Visnovsky and Getzlaf converted goals for the Ducks (4-3-0) as the first period ended 2-2.

Anaheim goaltender Jonas Hiller had a tough night and was pulled for Dan Ellis after allowing five goals in 19 shots.

Ellis saved all 16 shots he faced, but still the Ducks fell to a second consecutive defeat.
