Spain and France will contest the European basketball championship final today, while also qualifying for next year’s Olympics in London.
Juan Carlos Navarro scored 35 points in a performance his coach called a “masterpiece,” as defending champions Spain beat Macedonia 92-80 on Friday.
France got 22 points from Tony Parker to beat Russia 79-71 in the late game. Nicolas Batum added 19 points for France, which reached the championship game for the first time.

France went on a 10-2 to finish the third quarter and pull away. Going into the fourth, the run was 16-4, with eight points coming from Ali Traore.
Pau Gasol had 22 points and 17 rebounds for Spain.
Navarro scored 19 points in the third quarter to break open a close game. Spain coach Sergio Scariolo did not hold back in praising his point guard.
“He’s like a masterpiece you see in Louvre or Prado, he is like one of the best artists, he has his own inspiration ... He is out of this planet,” Scariolo said. “We are very proud to have reached the goal of qualifying for the Olympics. It was tough. They play with heart and class and they play smart.”
Macedonia have been the surprise team of the tournament and gave Spain a tough game, leading 45-44 at halftime.
Then Navarro took over.
“He was amazing, incredible, he did everything on both ends,” said Spain power forward Serge Ibaka, who had 11 points.
Macedonia coach Marin Dokuzovski said his team came into the game “as always with a big heart and to play hard.”
“We knew whom we were playing and that it would be hard to surprise Spain. We didn’t play such good defense as before, my players were getting tired and Spain’s offensive rebounds hurt us,” Dokuzovski said.
Bo McCalebb, the US-born Macedonia point guard, led his team with 25 points and five assists, while forward Pero Antic had 17 points and nine rebounds.
Gasol, who struggled with his shot, had nine offensive rebounds as Spain outscored Macedonia 22-6 from second-chance opportunities. Gasol was 8-of-20 from the field.
Younger brother Marc Gasol had 10 rebounds and 11 points, as Spain pulled down 15 more rebounds than Macedonia.
Ricky Rubio, the guard signed by the Minnesota Timberwolves, had seven rebounds and four assists to go with five points in 22 minutes.
The finalists qualified directly for the London Olympics. The next four teams go to an additional qualifying tournament.
Greece beat Serbia 87-77 earlier to join Lithuania and Macedonia there, with Russia also advancing.
Four-time NBA all-star DeMarcus Cousins arrived in Taiwan with his family early yesterday to finish his renewed contract with the Taiwan Beer Leopards in the T1 League. Cousins initially played a four-game contract with the Leopards in January. On March 18, the Taoyuan-based team announced that Cousins had renewed his contract. “Hi what’s up Leopard fans, I’m back. I’m excited to be back and can’t wait to join the team,” Cousins said in a video posted on the Leopard’s Facebook page. “Most of all, can’t wait to see you guys, the fans, next weekend. So make sure you come out and support the Beer
Revelations of positive doping tests for nearly two dozen Chinese swimmers that went unpunished sparked an intense flurry of accusations and legal threats between the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the head of the US drug-fighting organization, who has long been one of WADA’s fiercest critics. WADA on Saturday said it was turning to legal counsel to address a statement released by US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) CEO Travis Tygart, who said WADA and anti-doping authorities in China swept positive tests “under the carpet by failing to fairly and evenly follow the global rules that apply to everyone else in the world.” The
Taiwanese judoka Yang Yung-wei on Saturday won silver in the men’s under-60kg category at the Asian Judo Championships in Hong Kong. Nicknamed the “judo heartthrob” in Taiwan, the Olympic silver-medalist missed out on his first Asian Championships gold when he lost to Japanese judoka Taiki Nakamura in the finals. Yang defeated three opponents on Saturday to reach the final after receiving a bye through the round of 32. He first topped Laotian Soukphaxay Sithisane in the round of 16 with two seoi nage (over-the-shoulder throws), then ousted Indian Vijay Kumar Yadav in the quarter-finals with his signature ude hishigi sankaku gatame (triangular armlock). Rafael Nadal on Wednesday said the upcoming French Open would be the moment to “give everything and die” on the court after his comeback from injury in Barcelona was curtailed by Alex de Minaur. The 22-time Grand Slam title winner, back playing this week after three months on the sidelines, battled well, but eventually crumbled 7-5, 6-1 against the world No. 11 from Australia in the second round. Nadal, 37, who missed virtually all of last season, is hoping to compete at the French Open next month where he is the record 14-time champion. The Spaniard said the clash with De Minaur was
