Taiwan won their first game in round two of the International Baseball Federation’s under-16 Baseball World Championship on Thursday, beating Venezuela 9-2, at the Romo Chavez Stadium in Aguascalientes, Mexico.
The victory came after an outstanding performance by Taiwan starting pitcher Tu Chia-ming, who played a complete game giving up only two runs.
Taiwan went on to clinch a spot among the final eight teams after placing third in group A in round one. The teams bring their score into second-round play.
Tu pitched nine innings on Thursday, giving away only two runs in the second inning, giving Venezuela a 2-0 lead. In the third inning, Taiwan scored two runs, leveling the score at 2-2.
The team then added another three runs in the fourth inning after Venezuela gifted them two runs following a mistake, before scoring another two runs in the sixth and eighth innings to seal the victory.
After Thursday’s victory over Venezuela, Taiwan stand at two wins and two losses, and they have to beat both Cuba and the Netherlands to advance to the finals.
Yesterday, Taiwan were scheduled to play the Netherlands at the Panamerican Stadium in Lagos de Moreno, Mexico..
