Washington Nationals starter Wang Chien-ming bagged his second straight win on Thursday in four minor league rehabilitation starts, moving him one step closer to his long-anticipated return to the major leagues.
The Taiwanese right-hander threw 75 pitches over six scoreless innings to help the Double-A Harrisburg Senators defeat the Akron Aeros 3-1.
Wang allowed six hits, struck out one and walked none in his longest outing since he began pitching rehab games late last month, the final step in his long recovery from surgery on his right shoulder in July 2009.
The 31-year-old’s velocity reached a high of 151kph, the best in his four starts.
“This was a good step for him. It was a different team with a different approach, a few more guys who’ve been in the higher levels. There were more left-handed hitters. It was good for him,” Senators pitching coach Randy Tomlin said of Wang’s outing.
Fellow Taiwanese Chen Chun-hsiu, the Aeros catcher, went hitless against Wang, but did manage an RBI double against Senators closer Rafael Martin, giving the Aeros their only run of the game.
Wang is expected to start two more rehab games in the minors, very likely for the Syracuse Chiefs in Triple-A — the highest minor league level of play — before his big league club, the Washington Nationals, adds him to the roster at the end of the month, according to reports.
Wang, who has not pitched for the Nationals since the club took a chance on him after the 2009 season, made his name with the New York Yankees, winning 19 games in both 2006 and 2007, and going 8-2 in the first half of 2008 before injuries derailed his career.
