Third-seeded Tomas Berdych recovered from a slow start to beat Jeremy Chardy 6-2, 6-3 on Monday in the first round of the Dubai Championships and fifth-seeded Ivan Ljubicic was forced to retire with a leg injury against Ukrainian qualifier Sergei Bubka.
Berdych took advantage of Chardy’s 40 unforced errors, recovering from a 2-1 deficit in the first set to take the next five games. In the second set, Berdych won six of the final seven games and 16 of the last 20 points.
“It was really solid,” said Berdych, who has been recovering from the flu. “I was not really aiming for some special and extreme shots. Just try to be as consistent and patient and with not too many mistakes.”

Bubka, the son of pole-vaulting great Sergei Bubka, was leading 6-1, 0-1 when Ljubicic quit after being examined by a trainer for pain below the right knee, but above the ankle.
“I couldn’t push my serve a lot,” Ljubicic said. “The start of the second set, I said, ‘OK, I can’t win like this,’ so I just go 100 percent and see what happens. If it’s painful, then I just stop.”
Earlier, eighth-seeded Ernests Gulbis defeated German qualifier Michael Berrer 6-3, 6-4. Gulbis hit 10 aces and broke Berrer once in each set.
“It’s the first win after a long time for me, because I skipped Rotterdam because I was sick and in Marseille I didn’t feel so well,” the Latvian said. “I came here a bit early on Thursday and practiced hard and good. So I reach [sic] some kind of condition which I’m able to play good tennis.”
Richard Gasquet of France also advanced, defeating Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria 6-2, 6-4. Also, Florian Mayer beat Finnish veteran Jarkko Nieminen 6-4, 6-2 and Philipp Petzschner downed Andreas Seppi of Italy 3-6, 7-6 (2), 6-2.
Gasquet benefited from a slew of unforced errors by Dimitrov.
“I know he can miss some easy shots. That’s what he did at four-all in the second set,” Gasquet said. “He missed four easy forehands.”

Fourth-seeded John Isner was bundled out of the Delray Beach International Championships in the first round on Monday after a 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (13) loss to 76th-ranked Teymuraz Gabashvili of Russia.
Isner failed to take advantage of four match points in the final set tiebreaker.
The American helped Gabashvili win the match on his fifth match point in the tiebreaker when he double-faulted away the final point.
Isner was clearly upset by the loss and was not in the mood to answer questions.
“I didn’t play well,” he said.
Gabashvili will play the winner of the match between 2009 US Open champion Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina and Richard Berankis of Lithuania.
“In the end, he just went for his first serve,” Gabashvili said. “He had four match points he saved, but he just went for it there and in the end it went for me.”
Earlier, top-seeded Andy Roddick withdrew from the tournament because of flu-like symptoms. The eighth-ranked American complained of feeling ill before winning the RMK Championships title over Canada’s Milos Raonic 7-6, 6-7, 7-5 on Sunday.
“I’m very disappointed,” he said. “I’ve waited too long to come back and play this tournament, but with traveling internationally [for Davis Cup] and Palm Springs and Miami coming up on that, it’s just unfortunate timing for this sickness.”
The top four seeds in the Delray Beach tournament were all Americans, with Roddick followed by 2009 champion Mardy Fish, Sam Querrey and Isner. Qualifier Marinko Matosevic of Australia took Roddick’s spot in the draw and will face Dudi Sela of Israel in the first round.
The third-seeded Querrey moved into the second round with a 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 win over Dustin Brosn of Germany, while James Blake of the US beat seventh-seeded German Benjamin Becker 7-5, 6-4.
Florent Serra of France defeated US wildcard Ryan Harrison 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 in another first round match and Brazilian Ricardo Mello rallied to down Rainer Schuettler of Germany 2-6, 6-2, 6-3.

Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic made amends for her two previous first round exits here when she stunned the seventh seeded Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland in straight sets on Monday.
Safarova, the world No. 35 defeated the 10th ranked Radwanska 7-6 (7/3), 6-3 to win her first main draw match in the Qatari capital on her third appearance in the tournament, which is making a comeback to the WTA regular circuit after two years.
In 2005, Safarova came through the qualifying tournament but lost to Russian Maria Kirilenko and in 2008 she lost to Dominika -Cibulkova of Slovakia.
However, on Monday the Czech appeared in good touch as she broke her Doha jinx to extend her domination over Radwanska, who she has now beaten three times in their four meetings.
“It’s nice to start off with a win, especially in Doha where I’ve never won a match before,” said Safarova, who has won four singles titles.
In other matches on Monday, Frenchwoman Marion Bartoli defeated Russian Alisa Klebanova 7-5, 6-2, while 2006 winner Nadia Petrova of Russia ousted Italian Roberta Vinci 6-4, 6-2.
Petrova, who defeated Amelie Mauresmo in the 2006 final in Doha, now runs into the top-seeded Caroline Wozniacki, who was given a first-round bye and will play her first match today following her win in Dubai on Sunday.
Revelations of positive doping tests for nearly two dozen Chinese swimmers that went unpunished sparked an intense flurry of accusations and legal threats between the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the head of the US drug-fighting organization, who has long been one of WADA’s fiercest critics. WADA on Saturday said it was turning to legal counsel to address a statement released by US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) CEO Travis Tygart, who said WADA and anti-doping authorities in China swept positive tests “under the carpet by failing to fairly and evenly follow the global rules that apply to everyone else in the world.” The
Taiwanese judoka Yang Yung-wei on Saturday won silver in the men’s under-60kg category at the Asian Judo Championships in Hong Kong. Nicknamed the “judo heartthrob” in Taiwan, the Olympic silver-medalist missed out on his first Asian Championships gold when he lost to Japanese judoka Taiki Nakamura in the finals. Yang defeated three opponents on Saturday to reach the final after receiving a bye through the round of 32. He first topped Laotian Soukphaxay Sithisane in the round of 16 with two seoi nage (over-the-shoulder throws), then ousted Indian Vijay Kumar Yadav in the quarter-finals with his signature ude hishigi sankaku gatame (triangular armlock). RALLY: It was only the second time the Taiwanese has partnered with Kudermetova, and the match seemed tight until they won seven points in a row to take the last set 10-2 Taiwan’s Chan Hao-ching and Russia’s Veronika Kudermetova on Sunday won the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix women’s doubles final in Stuttgart, Germany. Chan and Kudermetova fell 4-6 in the first set after having their serve broken three times, although they played increasingly well. Taiwanese gymnast Lee Chih-kai failed to secure an Olympic berth in the pommel horse following a second-place finish at the last qualifier in Doha on Friday, a performance that Lee and his coach called “unconvincing.” The Tokyo Olympics silver medalist finished runner-up in the final after scoring 6.6 for degree of difficulty and 8.800 for execution for a combined score of 15.400. That was just 0.100 short of Jordan’s Ahmad Abu Al Soud, who had qualified for the event in Paris before the Apparatus World Cup series in Qatar’s capital.
