NHL: Ryan Kesler’s hat-trick helps Canucks rout Oilers

Reuters and AP, VANCOUVER

Ryan Kesler tipped in a pair of third-period goals to complete a second career hat-trick and lead the Vancouver Canucks to a 6-1 win over the Edmonton Oilers on Friday.

The Western Conference-leading Canucks (27-8-5) have won eight straight games and remain two points ahead of the Detroit Red Wings, who defeated the Calgary Flames 5-4 in a shootout.

Daniel Sedin scored twice in the second period for the Canucks and added an assist on Alexander Edler’s third period goal. Henrik Sedin had three assists.

Canucks’ back-up goalie Cory Schneider improved to 8-0-2 on the season, but had his bid for a shutout spoiled by Ales Hemsky, who jammed in a loose puck with less than a second remaining in the second period.

“It’s no fun to get beat by that score,” Oilers winger Taylor Hall said. “It could have been a whole different game if we’d done some things differently.”

Despite Vancouver outshooting the Oilers 14-6 in the opening period, the game was scoreless as Vancouver could not find a way past Oilers goalie Nikolai Khabibulin.

However, Sedin and Kesler scored on the first two shots in the second period 1:34 apart before the floodgates opened.
