Badminton world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei capped his most prolific year when he bagged his ninth title in the Hong Kong Open Super Series final on Sunday.
The Malaysian avenged his biggest blot of the year, August’s world championship quarter-final loss to Taufik Hidayat, by overcoming the Indonesian former Olympic champion 21-19, 21-9.
The win was Lee’s sixth Super Series title of the year following victorious opens in South Korea, Malaysia, Indonesia and Japan as well as the All England Open.
He also won two Grand Prix Gold events in Macau and Malaysia and the Commonwealth Games gold medal in October.
In the women’s singles final, India’s Saina Nehwal also ended this year on a high when she claimed her third Super Series title and fifth crown of the year. She beat China’s Wang Shixian 15-21, 21-16, 21-17.
The Super Series now moves on to the finals in Taiwan from Jan. 5 to Jan. 9.
