Anderson’s second-half equalizer ensured Manchester United will avoid their main rivals in the last 16 of the Champions League after a hard-fought 1-1 draw with Valencia at Old Trafford yesterday.
United needed to avoid defeat to seal top spot in Group C, but were left shocked when Pablo Hernandez fired the visitors from La Liga into a 32nd minute lead robbing the hosts of a record six successive Champions League clean sheets.
Sir Alex Ferguson’s side were guilty of wasting a string of opportunities and it looked like the evening would finish in frustration before Anderson was well placed to level in the 62nd minute, only the Brazilian’s second goal in three-and-a-half-years at United.

The point was enough to ensure United will avoid the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona when the draw for the knockout phase is made on Dec. 17.
Ferguson said he was relieved to have ensured avoiding the bigger guns.
“Well we could have won the match tonight, but their keeper made some brilliant saves,” he said. “Berbatov especially could have scored five [like he did in the previous Premier League home game] but he missed with two headers and the others were saved.”
Ferguson had claimed on the eve of the game that he would be fielding his strongest possible side in an attempt to finish top of the group.
However, the United manager sprang a major surprise before kick-off by naming 20-year-old rookie goalkeeper Ben Amos ahead of Edwin van der Sar and Tomasz Kuszczak.
It was only Amos’s third senior start for United and first in the Champions League.
Amos was called into action from an early stage, the keeper doing well to keep out Alejandro Dominguez’s dipping right-foot attempt at his near post.
Dominguez was a real threat throughout, the Argentina-born player going close himself to breaking the deadlock in the 18th minute with a fiercely struck effort that rattled the United woodwork as the Spanish visitors took the game to the hosts.
Anderson was presented with a glorious opportunity to put his side ahead in the 15th minute only to shoot straight at the keeper after the Valencia defence had opened up.
Anderson quickly atoned for his error by carving out a great chance for Berbatov to end his two-year Champions League goal drought.
However, the Bulgarian fluffed the chance as he attempted to round keeper Vincente Guaita.
Then Guaita did well to keep out Park Ji-sung’s close-range volley before Valencia took the lead 13 minutes before half-time.
Once again the troublesome Dominguez was at the heart of the move as his beautifully weighted pass to Hernandez allowed the Spanish midfielder to fire beyond Amos.
“It is a shame we didn’t keep a clean sheet, but the most important thing is that we finished top of the group,” United captain Nemanja Vidic said.
Wayne Rooney almost brought them back on level terms with a delightful curling shot from outside the area that crashed against the bar before rebounding to Nani who could only fire wide of a gaping net.
That miss summed up United’s evening, which became even more frustrating when Rio Ferdinand was forced to hobble out of the game in the 52nd minute.
Rooney spurned another opportunity when he fired narrowly wide on the turn before Valencia’s good fortune finally ran out when Anderson sent United back to the top of Group C.
A stinging long-range shot by Park was parried by Guaita into the path of the former Porto player to prod home.
BURSASPOR V RANGERS

Bursaspor struck late to draw 1-1 draw against Rangers and at least earn a first point in their final Champions League Group C game on Tuesday.
Rangers, already assured of coming third and taking a Europa League spot, went ahead after a rare attack in the 19th minute with Kenny Miller driving home a shot from a left-wing cross.
Bursaspor dominated possession but failed to translate that into chances until Sercan Yildirim whipped up the enthusiastic home support by firing in a cross from Ozan Ipek in the 79th.
“It was a good end to our campaign. We played good football and exerted a lot of pressure and created scoring opportunities in the second half,” Bursaspor coach Ertugrul Saglam said. “It was a match we should have won and we should be disappointed that we only drew.”
Rangers had to survive an intense period of pressure in the last 10 minutes as Bursaspor went in search of a victory.
Sercan had a golden chance to win the game in the 86th minute when he beat one defender on a run into the box, but he lost control of the ball with only the keeper to beat.
Both teams had already been eliminated from the Champions League before Tuesday’s match, with Manchester United on 14 points and Valencia (11) going through from a tough group.
Rangers finished with six points and Bursaspor on one.
Bursa’s preparations for the match had been overshadowed by trouble between their fans and those of Istanbul’s Besiktas at a domestic league match on Sunday. Several people were stabbed in a mass brawl ahead of the game.
US track and field athletes have about four dozen pieces to choose from when assembling their uniforms at the Olympics. The one grabbing the most attention is a high-cut leotard that barely covers the bikini line and has triggered debate between those who think it is sexist and others who say they do not need the Internet to make sure they have good uniforms. Among those critical or laughing at the uniforms included Paralympian Femita Ayanbeku, sprinter Britton Wilson and even athletes from other countries such as Britain’s Abigail Irozuru, who wrote on social media: “Was ANY female athlete consulted in
Four-time NBA all-star DeMarcus Cousins arrived in Taiwan with his family early yesterday to finish his renewed contract with the Taiwan Beer Leopards in the T1 League. Cousins initially played a four-game contract with the Leopards in January. On March 18, the Taoyuan-based team announced that Cousins had renewed his contract. “Hi what’s up Leopard fans, I’m back. I’m excited to be back and can’t wait to join the team,” Cousins said in a video posted on the Leopard’s Facebook page. “Most of all, can’t wait to see you guys, the fans, next weekend. So make sure you come out and support the Beer
Former US Masters champion Zach Johnson was left embarrassed after a foul-mouthed response to ironic cheers from spectators after a triple bogey at Augusta National on Friday. Johnson, the 2007 Masters winner, missed the cut after his three-over-par round of 75 left him on seven-over 151 for 36 holes, his six on the par-three 12th playing a big role in his downfall. Television footage showed Johnson reacting to sarcastic cheers and applause when he tapped in for the triple bogey by yelling: “Oh fuck off.” Such a response would be considered bad form in any golf tournament, but is particularly out of keeping
The sacred flame for the Paris Olympics was lit yesterday in Olympia, Greece, the birthplace of the ancient Games, in a ceremony inspired by antiquity and marked by messages of hope amid multiple global crises. “In ancient times, the Olympic Games brought together the Greek city states, even — and in particular — during times of war and conflict,” International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach said. “Today, the Olympic Games are the only event that brings the entire world together in peaceful competition. Then as now, the Olympic athletes are sending this powerful message — yes, it is possible to compete fiercely
