Darren Fletcher has admitted that Manchester United’s players are already thinking ahead to this week’s eagerly awaited derby with Manchester City.
Sir Alex Ferguson’s team entertain Wolverhampton Wanderers at Old Trafford today before the big game at the City of Manchester Stadium on Wednesday.
Fletcher revealed that the City match was already playing on the minds of the United players even though they have an important game with Wolves first.
However, United’s Scotland international insisted that it was vital the team, who start the weekend in third spot, five points behind leaders Chelsea, go into their biggest match of the campaign with another win behind them.
That would ensure United face their city rivals on the back of six successive wins.
“Obviously we are aware the Manchester City game is next midweek and everyone will have it in the back of their minds, but it cannot become any more than that,” Fletcher said.
“Wolves is also a massive game because it is the next one. And three points then would set us up nicely for what is to follow,” he said.
Ferguson saw his side move to within a point of qualifying for the last 16 of the Champions League with a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Bursaspor in midweek.
However, the win came at a cost with both Fletcher and Nani, who has been in exceptional form this season, suffering ankle and groin injuries respectively.
Both players are likely to be missing against Wolves while Ferguson is also expected to make sweeping changes after fielding a young side in Turkey.
Goalscorers Bebe and Gabriel Obertan are likely to make way along with defender Chris Smalling as Rio Ferdinand, Javier Hernandez and Park Ji-sung all eye returns for Wolves’ second visit to Old Trafford in 11 days.
Mick McCarthy’s side gave a good account of themselves before being knocked out of the League Cup last month courtesy of Hernandez’s last minute goal.
Wolves have only won twice in the league this season but are snarling again after a 2-1 victory over City last weekend.
“They’ll have had us watched last Saturday and will know it won’t be easy,” McCarthy said. “We upset Tottenham for 75 minutes and Chelsea for 80 minutes.”
“We did it last Saturday against City and the previous Tuesday against United,” he said. “The result last Saturday helped do a whole lot for self-belief and confidence. No matter what you do if you keep getting beat you start to wonder where the results are going to come from.”
US track and field athletes have about four dozen pieces to choose from when assembling their uniforms at the Olympics. The one grabbing the most attention is a high-cut leotard that barely covers the bikini line and has triggered debate between those who think it is sexist and others who say they do not need the Internet to make sure they have good uniforms. Among those critical or laughing at the uniforms included Paralympian Femita Ayanbeku, sprinter Britton Wilson and even athletes from other countries such as Britain’s Abigail Irozuru, who wrote on social media: “Was ANY female athlete consulted in
Four-time NBA all-star DeMarcus Cousins arrived in Taiwan with his family early yesterday to finish his renewed contract with the Taiwan Beer Leopards in the T1 League. Cousins initially played a four-game contract with the Leopards in January. On March 18, the Taoyuan-based team announced that Cousins had renewed his contract. “Hi what’s up Leopard fans, I’m back. I’m excited to be back and can’t wait to join the team,” Cousins said in a video posted on the Leopard’s Facebook page. “Most of all, can’t wait to see you guys, the fans, next weekend. Former US Masters champion Zach Johnson was left embarrassed after a foul-mouthed response to ironic cheers from spectators after a triple bogey at Augusta National on Friday. Johnson, the 2007 Masters winner, missed the cut after his three-over-par round of 75 left him on seven-over 151 for 36 holes, his six on the par-three 12th playing a big role in his downfall. Television footage showed Johnson reacting to sarcastic cheers and applause when he tapped in for the triple bogey by yelling: “Oh fuck off.” Such a response would be considered bad form in any golf tournament, but is particularly out of keeping
Taiwan’s Lee Jhe-huei and Yang Po-hsuan on Saturday won the men’s doubles bronze medal at the Badminton Asia Championships in Ningbo, China, after they were bested by the hosts in their semi-final. The Taiwanese shuttlers lost to China’s Liang Wei Keng and Wang Chang, who advanced to yesterday’s final against Malaysia’s Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzudin. The Chinese pair outplayed Lee and Yang in straight games. Although the Taiwanese got off to a slow start in the first game, they eventually tied it 14-14, before Liang and Wang went on to blow past them to win 21-17. In the second game, Lee and
