Alex Rodriguez hit a three-run home run, his second homer of the game, in the top of the ninth inning to help the New York Yankees to a 4-3 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Friday.
The win, combined with Tampa Bay’s 4-3 loss to the Los Angeles Angels, allowed the Yankees to overtake the Rays in the tight American League East race.
The Yankees were trailing 3-1 before Rodriguez smashed his three-run blast off relief pitcher Koji Uehara. Mariano Rivera then pitched a perfect ninth inning for his 31st save.
Uehara thought he had struck out Rodriguez to finish the game, but did not get the call from home plate umpire Ted Barrett.
“From where I was looking, I could see their whole dugout,” Rodriguez said. “And their whole dugout literally jumped ... hoping or expecting that to be strike three. So they laughed at me, and I laughed at them a little.”
Baltimore’s Kevin Millwood and Yankees starter A.J. Burnett had dueled through seven innings before both left the game with the Orioles leading 3-1.
Millwood gave up a homer to Rodriguez to start the second inning, but escaped further damage by stranding three Yankees runners. He allowed just three hits over his final five innings.
Burnett gave up solo home runs to Adam Jones (fourth inning) and Robert Andino (seventh), while Nick Markakis’ sacrifice fly brought home Cesar Izturis in the third.
Burnett allowed three runs on six hits with a walk, striking out five, while Millwood finished with five hits, four walks and struck out six batters.
“When you’re down and you win like that, that’s pretty big, especially the way we’ve been playing,” said Yankees catcher Jorge Posada, who led off the ninth inning with a single.
“A win like this really helps us — helps us mentally,” Posada said.

Revelations of positive doping tests for nearly two dozen Chinese swimmers that went unpunished sparked an intense flurry of accusations and legal threats between the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the head of the US drug-fighting organization, who has long been one of WADA’s fiercest critics. WADA on Saturday said it was turning to legal counsel to address a statement released by US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) CEO Travis Tygart, who said WADA and anti-doping authorities in China swept positive tests “under the carpet by failing to fairly and evenly follow the global rules that apply to everyone else in the world.” The

He first topped Laotian Soukphaxay Sithisane in the round of 16 with two seoi nage (over-the-shoulder throws), then ousted Indian Vijay Kumar Yadav in the quarter-finals with his signature ude hishigi sankaku gatame (triangular armlock).
