Taipei to host IBAF clash

Taipei City has won a bid to host the International Baseball Federation’s (IBAF’s) first Little League world championship next year, Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin announced on Tuesday.

National Little League teams from more than 16 countries are expected to take part in the tournament, slated to take place in July and August next year, Hau said.

Hau called for Taiwan’s Little Leaguers to “strive to make sure the trophy is kept in Taiwan.”

“The holding of the first IBAF Little League championship in the nation’s capital will be the best gift to the Republic of China on its 100th anniversary, which will be celebrated next year,” he said.

He said the city expressed keen interest in hosting the inaugural championship when IBAF president Riccardo Fraccari visited Taipei in May.

The IBAF chief, who has been traveling the world since early in the year to push for the return of baseball to the Summer Olympic Games and who paid an earlier visit to Taipei in February as part of that drive, said countries from the Americas, Asia, Europe and Oceania expected to take part in the championship, making it a global event.
