INTERLEAGUE GAMES
Stephen Strasburg struck out nine batters and allowed one run over six innings, but also suffered his first major league defeat as the Washington Nationals lost 1-0 to the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday.
On the last batter he faced, Strasburg (2-1) got his 41st strikeout. That broke a record held by Herb Score, who fanned 40 in his first four major league starts for Cleveland in 1955.

For the third time in four starts, Strasburg did not walk a batter.
YANKEES 6, D’BACKS 5, 10 INNINGS
In Phoenix, Arizona, Curtis Granderson led off the top of the 10th with a home run and Mariano Rivera got out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the bottom of the inning to give New York the victory over Arizona.
Alex Rodriguez’s sacrifice fly in the ninth inning tied the game at 5-5. Granderson greeted Carlos Rosa (0-2), the Diamondbacks’ fifth reliever, with a towering home run to right field.
Rivera (1-1) loaded the bases, only to get Chris Young to foul out to the catcher, Adam LaRoche to pop up to third and Mark Reynolds to strike out.
ANGELS 2, DODGERS 1
In Anaheim, California, Russell Martin was tagged out at second base an instant before Reed Johnson would have crossed the plate with the tying run in the ninth inning, allowing Los Angeles to escape with the win.
Moments after Matt Kemp was picked off second, the Los Angeles Dodgers lost their sixth straight game on their second base-running blunder in a wacky ninth inning.
Pinch-hitter Jamey Carroll’s two-out single off Angels closer Brian Fuentes should have scored pinch-runner Johnson easily from second, but left fielder Juan Rivera alertly threw back to second base to get Martin, who had been on first.
Plate umpire Mike DiMuro immediately ruled Johnson hadn’t reached home in time, setting off an abashed celebration for the Angels after their fifth consecutive win over the Dodgers.
Fuentes earned his 12th save in 15 chances.
Joel Pineiro (7-6) allowed six hits while pitching into the eighth inning for the Angels.

Revelations of positive doping tests for nearly two dozen Chinese swimmers that went unpunished sparked an intense flurry of accusations and legal threats between the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the head of the US drug-fighting organization, who has long been one of WADA’s fiercest critics. WADA on Saturday said it was turning to legal counsel to address a statement released by US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) CEO Travis Tygart, who said WADA and anti-doping authorities in China swept positive tests “under the carpet by failing to fairly and evenly follow the global rules that apply to everyone else in the world.” The
Taiwanese judoka Yang Yung-wei on Saturday won silver in the men’s under-60kg category at the Asian Judo Championships in Hong Kong. Nicknamed the “judo heartthrob” in Taiwan, the Olympic silver-medalist missed out on his first Asian Championships gold when he lost to Japanese judoka Taiki Nakamura in the finals. Yang defeated three opponents on Saturday to reach the final after receiving a bye through the round of 32. He first topped Laotian Soukphaxay Sithisane in the round of 16 with two seoi nage (over-the-shoulder throws), then ousted Indian Vijay Kumar Yadav in the quarter-finals with his signature ude hishigi sankaku gatame (triangular armlock). Rafael Nadal on Wednesday said the upcoming French Open would be the moment to “give everything and die” on the court after his comeback from injury in Barcelona was curtailed by Alex de Minaur. The 22-time Grand Slam title winner, back playing this week after three months on the sidelines, battled well, but eventually crumbled 7-5, 6-1 against the world No. 11 from Australia in the second round. Nadal, 37, who missed virtually all of last season, is hoping to compete at the French Open next month where he is the record 14-time champion. The Spaniard said the clash with De Minaur was
