Brazilian club Sao Paulo cruised to a 3-0 win over Paraguay’s Nacional on Thursday to lead Group 2 of the Copa Libertadores.
Fellow Brazilian club Internacional were held to a scoreless draw at Cerro of Uruguay, while Colombia’s Independiente Medellin and Racing of Uruguay also drew 0-0.
Dagoberto opened the scoring for Sao Paulo against Nacional with a looping header at the back post in the 30th minute off Hernanes’ pass.
Leo Lima tapped in a second goal three minutes later and Washington finished off a move involving Hernanes and Richarlyson to score the third in the 55th minute.
The result puts Sao Paulo top of Group 2 with nine points from four games, ahead of Once Caldas (8), Monterrey (5) and Nacional (0).
Strong performances from Internacional goalkeeper Roberto Abbondanzieri and his opposite number Mathias Roledo of Cerro kept the scoreline blank in the clubs’ Group 5 match.
The draw lifted Cerro to seven points from three matches, two clear of Internacional at the top of the group. Third-placed Deportivo Quito have one point, while Emelec are last on zero, though both have a game in hand.
The Group 1 match between Independiente Medellin and Racing was marred by the death of a Medellin fan before the game.
Juan Camilo Gomez, aged 22, was stabbed by a fan of a rival Colombian club during a clash between supporters, police chief John Jaime Ospina said.
Medellin had Cesar Valoyes and Lewis Ochoa sent off in the 67th and 89th minutes respectively during the ensuing 0-0 draw.
Brazilian club Corinthians top the group with seven points from three matches, ahead of Racing (4), Medellin (3) and Cerro Porteno (1).
Revelations of positive doping tests for nearly two dozen Chinese swimmers that went unpunished sparked an intense flurry of accusations and legal threats between the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the head of the US drug-fighting organization, who has long been one of WADA’s fiercest critics. WADA on Saturday said it was turning to legal counsel to address a statement released by US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) CEO Travis Tygart, who said WADA and anti-doping authorities in China swept positive tests “under the carpet by failing to fairly and evenly follow the global rules that apply to everyone else in the world.” The

Taiwanese gymnast Lee Chih-kai failed to secure an Olympic berth in the pommel horse following a second-place finish at the last qualifier in Doha on Friday, a performance that Lee and his coach called “unconvincing.” The Tokyo Olympics silver medalist finished runner-up in the final after scoring 6.6 for degree of difficulty and 8.800 for execution for a combined score of 15.400. That was just 0.100 short of Jordan’s Ahmad Abu Al Soud, who had qualified for the event in Paris before the Apparatus World Cup series in Qatar’s capital.
