Chelsea captain John Terry was not to blame for driving into a club security guard, the wounded official said as the player was set to visit him yesterday.
England centerback Terry was questioned by police and breathalyzed after leaving Chelsea’s deputy security manager Steve Rowley with a badly bruised leg as he drove away from the club’s Stamford Bridge ground.
“John was quickly in contact with me once he realized what had happened and there’s no bad feeling at all on my part,” Rowley said in a brief statement through the west London club. “It wasn’t his fault at all, it was a complete accident.”
The security chief was taken to hospital.
Terry, 29, accompanied by his wife Toni, had been driving slowly and was found to be within the legal alcohol limit.
He was expected to visit Rowley yesterday, the defender’s spokesman Phil Hall said.
The security guard was trying to clear a scrum of photographers and fans as Terry left the ground on Tuesday after the Blues were knocked out of the Champions League round-of-16.
“The club made contact with John and put the police in touch,” Hall told Sky Sports television. “They breathalyzed him, but he hadn’t had a single drop to drink, so the breathalyzer showed nothing. John answered any questions they asked and that was the end of the matter.”
Terry has rarely been out of the headlines in recent weeks. He was sacked as England captain by coach Fabio Capello amid allegations of an affair with the former girlfriend of former international and Chelsea teammate Wayne Bridge.
