Chinese recruiting Taiwanese baseball coaches: newspaper

China plans to recruit at least 20 Taiwanese baseball coaches in a bid to boost its clout in the sport, the Chinese-language newspaper United Daily News said yesterday.

Taiwanese pitcher Chuang Sheng-hsiung of the Japanese team Chiba Lotte Marines has already agreed to coach a team in Jiangsu Province, the newspaper said.

The Jiangsu Hope Stars also plan to hire two coaches with experience in Taiwan’s pro-baseball league and the trio will promote the sport in local schools, the report said.

Other teams plan to follow Jiangsu’s lead, bringing to more than 20 the number of Taiwanese coaches likely to go to China this year, the report cited an unnamed source as saying.

Taiwan’s pro-baseball league declined to comment on the report when contacted yesterday.

The nation’s baseball has been hit by a string of match-fixing scandals in recent years and prosecutors are currently probing the latest allegations that have resulted in the arrest of six bookies and former players.
