Saracens boss Brendan Venter said his side had “beaten themselves” after the English Premiership leaders lost for the first time in the league this season in a 23-19 away reverse to London Irish.
Saracens were leading until 10 minutes from the end of Sunday’s match at the Madejksi Stadium and they would have increased their six-point advantage if just one of several failed drop-goal attempts had been on target.
Instead, Irish hit back with a try from Elvis Seveali’i and Chris Malone’s conversion set the seal on a win for the home side that saw the second-placed Exiles close to within three points of Saracens.
“The boys are very disappointed,” former South Africa international Venter said after a defeat that left Saracens with a record of nine wins, one draw and one loss from 11 league matches this season. “They [London Irish] played well, but we will learn from this experience and become a better team because in the end we beat ourselves.”
Elsewhere, Danny Cipriani started for the first time since October after recovering from a hairline leg fracture as his Wasps side edged London rivals Harlequins 21-20 in front of a league record crowd of 76,716 at Twickenham.
Flyhalf Cipriani, who missed five of his seven shots at goal, but still kicked what turned out to be two important penalties, had fallen out of favor with England manager Martin Johnson long before his injury setback, but the 22-year-old still believes he can force his way back into the Test side with a series of consistent displays at club level.
“I’ll hopefully put a string of games together for Wasps,” Cipriani said. “If England come calling then that would be amazing because I’d love to be involved.”
Media reports in France have suggested Cipriani has already held talks with Stade Francais over a move to the Paris-based club when his Wasps contract expires at the end of the current European season, but Cipriani, who started on Sunday ahead of in-form stand-off Dave Walder, said: “I’m just focused on my rugby at the moment. I’m happy here.”
As for his own form, Cipriani, who won the last of his seven caps against the All Blacks last year, said: “I was disappointed with my goal-kicking, but I was pretty pleased with the rest of my game.”
In Sunday’s other matches, basement club Leeds gave themselves hope of avoiding the drop with a 16-15 win away at Newcastle, while fellow strugglers Bath claimed their first home victory since April with a 24-8 west country derby defeat of Gloucester.
Meanwhile, Leicester extended their unbeaten home record to 24 matches with a 32-6 win over Sale at Welford Road.
Four-time NBA all-star DeMarcus Cousins arrived in Taiwan with his family early yesterday to finish his renewed contract with the Taiwan Beer Leopards in the T1 League. Cousins initially played a four-game contract with the Leopards in January. On March 18, the Taoyuan-based team announced that Cousins had renewed his contract. “Hi what’s up Leopard fans, I’m back. I’m excited to be back and can’t wait to join the team,” Cousins said in a video posted on the Leopard’s Facebook page. “Most of all, can’t wait to see you guys, the fans, next weekend. So make sure you come out and support the Beer
Revelations of positive doping tests for nearly two dozen Chinese swimmers that went unpunished sparked an intense flurry of accusations and legal threats between the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the head of the US drug-fighting organization, who has long been one of WADA’s fiercest critics. WADA on Saturday said it was turning to legal counsel to address a statement released by US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) CEO Travis Tygart, who said WADA and anti-doping authorities in China swept positive tests “under the carpet by failing to fairly and evenly follow the global rules that apply to everyone else in the world.” The
Taiwanese judoka Yang Yung-wei on Saturday won silver in the men’s under-60kg category at the Asian Judo Championships in Hong Kong. Nicknamed the “judo heartthrob” in Taiwan, the Olympic silver-medalist missed out on his first Asian Championships gold when he lost to Japanese judoka Taiki Nakamura in the finals. Yang defeated three opponents on Saturday to reach the final after receiving a bye through the round of 32. He first topped Laotian Soukphaxay Sithisane in the round of 16 with two seoi nage (over-the-shoulder throws), then ousted Indian Vijay Kumar Yadav in the quarter-finals with his signature ude hishigi sankaku gatame (triangular armlock). He
Rafael Nadal on Wednesday said the upcoming French Open would be the moment to “give everything and die” on the court after his comeback from injury in Barcelona was curtailed by Alex de Minaur. The 22-time Grand Slam title winner, back playing this week after three months on the sidelines, battled well, but eventually crumbled 7-5, 6-1 against the world No. 11 from Australia in the second round. Nadal, 37, who missed virtually all of last season, is hoping to compete at the French Open next month where he is the record 14-time champion. The Spaniard said the clash with De Minaur was
