The Philadelphia Flyers denied the New Jersey Devils a chance to tie a record road winning streak with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over the in-form visitors on Monday.

James van Riemsdyk scored the decisive third goal in the final period to ensure the Flyers snapped New Jersey’s eight-game winning streak overall and halted a run of nine successive road victories for the Devils (14-5-0).

Entering the contest brimming with confidence, the Devils needed one more victory to tie the NHL record for most consecutive road wins to start a season set by the Buffalo Sabres in 2006, who registered 10 in a row.

However, Philadelphia (11-5-1) are also a team in good form and their sixth victory in seven games was set up by Darroll Powe and Scott Hartnell’s goals in the opening two periods.

New Jersey winger David Clarkson reduced the deficit to 2-1 with a wrist shot late in the second and after Van Riemsdyk had restored Philadelphia’s two-goal cushion, Zach Parise completed the scoring with one second remaining.

Claude Giroux had two assists and Ray Emery made 33 saves for the Flyers, who have won six of their last seven games. Martin Brodeur stopped 32 shots for the Devils, who trailed the entire game.

At Sunrise, Florida, defenseman Jack Johnson scored the only goal in the shootout as Los Angeles rallied for an away win.

Johnson and Jarrett Stoll scored power-play goals and Randy Jones scored short-handed for the Kings.

Nathan Horton, Cory Stillman and Victor Oreskovich scored for the Panthers. Tomas Vokoun, who came in with three shutouts in his previous five starts, stopped 31 shots for Florida.

ISLANDERS 4, BRUINS 1

At Boston, Matt Moulson scored two goals and Dwayne Roloson stopped 28 shots to lead New York to victory.

Tuukka Rask made 17 saves and Daniel Paille scored for Boston, which killed off all five penalties and has not allowed a goal in 22 consecutive power plays.

In other NHL action, it was:

• Blue Jackets 3, Oilers 2, SO

• Penguins 5, Ducks 2

• Lightning 4, Coyotes 1
