Tom Brady was in record-setting form on Sunday, guiding the New England Patriots to a crushing 59-0 National Football League triumph over the Tennessee Titans.
Brady threw five of his six touchdown passes in the second period — an NFL record for one quarter — building a record halftime lead of 45-0.
The final margin of victory equaled the biggest since the NFL merged with the American Football League in 1970. In 1976, the Los Angeles Rams blanked Atlanta 59-0.

“Every week we’re learning something more about ourselves and what we can do,” said Brady, who was playing his sixth game since returning in the wake of a knee injury suffered in last year’s season-opener.
Brady’s milestone second quarter included touchdown passes to Randy Moss of 40 and 28 yards, to Kevin Faulk of 38 yards and to Wes Welker of 30 and 5 yards.
In the first series of the third quarter, Brady threw a 9 yard touchdown pass to Moss before rookie Brian Hoyer took his place.

“Back to his old self,” said Welker, who caught 10 passes for a career-high 150 yards.
Titans defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch said the footing on a field glossed with snow was “no good.”
Brady said he didn’t notice any problem.
“We had good footing, and it was fun to be a part of it,” he said.
The largest margin of victory since the NFL began in 1920 came in the second week of that season, when the Rochester Jeffersons beat non-league opponents Fort Porter 66-0.

Drew Brees tossed four touchdown passes to help New Orleans win the battle of undefeated teams by crushing the New York 48-27 on Sunday.
The Giants’ (5-1) top-ranked defense marched into the Big Easy having allowed just 211 yards a game but was shredded by Brees, who completed 23 of 30 pass attempts to help the Saints rack up 493 yards in total offense and improve to 5-0.
Brees used all his weapons, with seven different players recording touchdowns, while the New Orleans defense ruined Eli Manning’s homecoming, harassing the New York quarterback who was playing his first game in the stadium where he grew up cheering his father, former Saints quarterback Archie Manning.

US track and field athletes have about four dozen pieces to choose from when assembling their uniforms at the Olympics. The one grabbing the most attention is a high-cut leotard that barely covers the bikini line and has triggered debate between those who think it is sexist and others who say they do not need the Internet to make sure they have good uniforms. Among those critical or laughing at the uniforms included Paralympian Femita Ayanbeku, sprinter Britton Wilson and even athletes from other countries such as Britain’s Abigail Irozuru, who wrote on social media: “Was ANY female athlete consulted in
Four-time NBA all-star DeMarcus Cousins arrived in Taiwan with his family early yesterday to finish his renewed contract with the Taiwan Beer Leopards in the T1 League. Cousins initially played a four-game contract with the Leopards in January. On March 18, the Taoyuan-based team announced that Cousins had renewed his contract. “Hi what’s up Leopard fans, I’m back. I’m excited to be back and can’t wait to join the team,” Cousins said in a video posted on the Leopard’s Facebook page. “Most of all, can’t wait to see you guys, the fans, next weekend. So make sure you come out and support the Beer
Former US Masters champion Zach Johnson was left embarrassed after a foul-mouthed response to ironic cheers from spectators after a triple bogey at Augusta National on Friday. Johnson, the 2007 Masters winner, missed the cut after his three-over-par round of 75 left him on seven-over 151 for 36 holes, his six on the par-three 12th playing a big role in his downfall. Television footage showed Johnson reacting to sarcastic cheers and applause when he tapped in for the triple bogey by yelling: “Oh fuck off.” Such a response would be considered bad form in any golf tournament, but is particularly out of keeping
The sacred flame for the Paris Olympics was lit yesterday in Olympia, Greece, the birthplace of the ancient Games, in a ceremony inspired by antiquity and marked by messages of hope amid multiple global crises. “In ancient times, the Olympic Games brought together the Greek city states, even — and in particular — during times of war and conflict,” International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach said. “Today, the Olympic Games are the only event that brings the entire world together in peaceful competition. Then as now, the Olympic athletes are sending this powerful message — yes, it is possible to compete fiercely
