Taiwan’s men’s doubles pair Chen Hong-ling and Lin Yu-lang defeated Hong Kong’s Yohan Hadikusumo Wiratama and Wang Wai Hong 14-21, 21-12, 21-19 for Taiwan’s first doubles championship win at the Yonex Open badminton tournament in Taipei yesterday.
Chen and Lin only managed to secure victory after winning two consecutive points at 19-19 in the third set.
In the women’s final, Cheng Shao-chieh defeated South Korea’s Bae Seung-hee 17-21, 21-12, 21-15 to take Taiwan’s first title in the women’s singles at the championship.
Cheng reached the finals after eight straight wins, including five in the qualifiers. Cheng, who had considered giving up badminton after the Olympic Games last year, described her victory as “unbelievable” and said she had never won a tournament when starting out in the qualifiers. Her previous best result at the Yonex Open was a berth in the 2004 quarter-finals.
This year represents Taiwan’s best ever performance at the Yonex Open. The previous best result was Chiu Chi-ju’s runner-up spot at the women’s singles tournament in 2004.
