West Ham United defender Calum Davenport and his mother were stabbed on Saturday in a suspected attempted murder at the family home, police said.
The 26-year-old required surgery on both legs after the incident at his family home in Bedford, southern England.
Both Davenport and his 49-year-old mother are in hospital. While their injuries are not life-threatening, Davenport was in a serious condition, English Premier League club West Ham said.
Two men aged 19 and 25 were arrested, the latter on suspicion of attempted murder, police said.
Bedfordshire Police said they were called at around 5am.
Davenport “was taken to hospital having received stab injuries,” a spokeswoman said. “He is still in hospital. He is not thought to be in a life-threatening condition at this moment in time.”
“A 49-year-old woman was also injured and taken to hospital. She is also not thought to be in a life-threatening condition,” the spokeswoman said, adding that officers were due to speak to her soon. “The 19-year-old man that was arrested this morning shortly after the incident is still with police. A 25-year-old man has also been arrested. He has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.”
The 25-year-old was arrested in Derby, central England, and was to be escorted back to Bedfordshire for questioning.
Davenport is a former England under-21 international, who cost the Hammers £3 million (US$5 million) when he joined from Tottenham Hotspur in 2007.
“West Ham United can confirm that Calum Davenport was being treated in hospital on Saturday,” the club said in a statement. “The 26-year-old defender and his mum both suffered stab wounds at home in Bedford. His mum is recovering, while Calum underwent surgery this morning and his injuries were described as serious by doctors. The club’s medical team are in contact with hospital staff.”
Davenport did not play in West Ham’s first game of the season, a 2-0 win at Wolverhampton Wanderers last weekend.
Bedford-born Davenport spent a spell on loan at Premier League rivals Sunderland last season and has also been loaned out to Watford.
