China’s Zheng Jie capitalized on a final set meltdown by world No. 1 Dinara Safina to reach the quarter-finals of the LA Championships with a 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 victory over the Russian on Thursday.
The 14th-seeded Zheng stood strong against a barrage of huge blows from her opponent over the course of the 2 hour, 10 minute contest to emerge with a first win in five attempts against the defending champion.
Safina had appeared on course for victory when she forged a 4-2 lead in the third set, but imploded completely, handing back the break with a double-fault before losing the final eight points of the match to crash out of the tournament.

“It’s tough to play her, but I didn’t do the right things,” Safina told reporters.”
Zheng advanced to a last eight encounter against in-form Australian Samantha Stosur, who continued her fine season with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over sixth seed Ana Ivanovic.
The 13th seed was delighted to overcome the Serbian former world No. 1, gaining some revenge for losing to Ivanovic in their last meeting at Wimbledon in June. It was also Stosur’s sixth win over a top 15 opponent this year.

“Anytime you play against someone you lost to recently, it’s a bit of a benchmark to test yourself,” Stosur said.
Russia’s Maria Sharapova continued her rehabilitation from a lengthy injury layoff when she rallied from a set down to defeat Alona Bondarenko 4-6, 6-0, 6-3.
The three-time Grand Slam champion benefited from a more aggressive approach against the Ukrainian compared with the last time they met in May, a straight sets victory for Bondarenko in Sharapova’s first tournament back from shoulder surgery.
“It was good to get the win and get my revenge,” the unseeded Sharapova said.
Sharapova will face Polish teenager Urszula Radwanska, who advanced when 12th seed Li Na of China withdrew because of an ankle injury.
Second seed Vera Zvonareva also advanced with a 7-6 (7/5), 4-6, 6-4 win over Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium and the Russian moves on to meet 10th seed Flavia Pennetta of Italy, who upended Nadia Petrova 6-3, 6-3.
No. 8 seed Agnieszka Radwanska, Urszula’s older sister, eased past Russia’s Anna Chakvetadze 6-3, 6-2 and will play Sorana Cirstea of Romania, who was 6-3, 1-0 ahead of Sabine Lisicki when the German retired with a shoulder injury.

US top seed Andy Roddick captured the 500th match victory of his career on Thursday, defeating compatriot Sam Querrey 7-6 (7/4), 6-4 to reach the quarter-finals of the ATP Washington Classic.
Roddick became the 36th Open-era player to reach 500 match wins and the fourth active player at the mark, the ninth-year professional joining Roger Federer with 657, Spain’s Carlos Moya on 573 and Australian Lleyton Hewitt with 511.
“It’s a pretty small number who have gotten there, an elite group,” Roddick said.
Fifth-ranked Roddick, who turns 27 later this month, won his only Grand Slam title at the 2003 US Open. He seeks a 29th career crown this week and fourth Washington title to go with the cake he received for his 500th match victory.
“That’s kind of a milestone in tennis,” Roddick said. “It’s a very humbling experience. Who knows? We might try for 500 more.”
Roddick, in his first event since losing a five-set thriller to Federer in last month’s Wimbledon final, will play big-serving Ivo Karlovic for a semi-final spot.
Karlovic ended the dream run of India qualifier Somdev Devvarman 7-5, 6-1. The two-time US college champion who ousted Croatian sixth seed Marin Cilic in the second round had beaten Karlovic in a January run to the final at Chennai.
Roddick is 4-1 against Karlovic, having never surrendered a service break to the Croatian in 12 sets, losing sets only in tie-breakers. The lanky Karlovic leads the ATP in aces this season, with Roddick second.
Roddick, who fired only three aces, won four of the last five points in the tie-break and broke Querrey in the third game of the second set, then saved two break points in the final game, winning when Querrey sent a backhand long.
Querrey, ranked 26th, has been sizzling the past month, reaching the finals at Newport and Indianapolis and winning last week’s tournament at Los Angeles.
Karlovic fired 14 aces, 11 in the first set, and connected on 63 percent of his first serves to beat Devvarman, who hit 70 percent of his first serves, but was broken in the last game of the first set and twice in the second set.
Former world No. 1s Hewitt and Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain both lost.
Defending champion and second seed Juan Martin Del Potro ousted Hewitt 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7/2) to avenge a straight-set loss to the 42nd-ranked Aussie in the second round this year at Wimbledon.
Tommy Haas blasted 19 aces to defeat Ferrero 7-5, 2-6, 6-1.
Four-time NBA all-star DeMarcus Cousins arrived in Taiwan with his family early yesterday to finish his renewed contract with the Taiwan Beer Leopards in the T1 League. Cousins initially played a four-game contract with the Leopards in January. On March 18, the Taoyuan-based team announced that Cousins had renewed his contract. “Hi what’s up Leopard fans, I’m back. I’m excited to be back and can’t wait to join the team,” Cousins said in a video posted on the Leopard’s Facebook page. “Most of all, can’t wait to see you guys, the fans, next weekend. So make sure you come out and support the Beer
Revelations of positive doping tests for nearly two dozen Chinese swimmers that went unpunished sparked an intense flurry of accusations and legal threats between the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the head of the US drug-fighting organization, who has long been one of WADA’s fiercest critics. WADA on Saturday said it was turning to legal counsel to address a statement released by US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) CEO Travis Tygart, who said WADA and anti-doping authorities in China swept positive tests “under the carpet by failing to fairly and evenly follow the global rules that apply to everyone else in the world.” The
Taiwanese judoka Yang Yung-wei on Saturday won silver in the men’s under-60kg category at the Asian Judo Championships in Hong Kong. Nicknamed the “judo heartthrob” in Taiwan, the Olympic silver-medalist missed out on his first Asian Championships gold when he lost to Japanese judoka Taiki Nakamura in the finals. Yang defeated three opponents on Saturday to reach the final after receiving a bye through the round of 32. He first topped Laotian Soukphaxay Sithisane in the round of 16 with two seoi nage (over-the-shoulder throws), then ousted Indian Vijay Kumar Yadav in the quarter-finals with his signature ude hishigi sankaku gatame (triangular armlock). He
Rafael Nadal on Wednesday said the upcoming French Open would be the moment to “give everything and die” on the court after his comeback from injury in Barcelona was curtailed by Alex de Minaur. The 22-time Grand Slam title winner, back playing this week after three months on the sidelines, battled well, but eventually crumbled 7-5, 6-1 against the world No. 11 from Australia in the second round. Nadal, 37, who missed virtually all of last season, is hoping to compete at the French Open next month where he is the record 14-time champion. The Spaniard said the clash with De Minaur was
