The World Games 2009 Kaohsiung: A glance at Taiwan’s best prospects at World Games

By Richard Hazeldine  /  STAFF REPORTER

They are also reigning Asian champions, having won the last three Asian tournaments, including last year in Hong Kong. Taiwan is also the reigning World Beach Tchoukball Champions from 2005.

Taiwan hosted the last World Championships in 2004 and won both the women’s and junior title, the men losing out to the Swiss, who are now ranked No. 1 in the world and stand in the way of yet another clean sweep.

Unfortunately, tchoukball is an invitational sport, so no medals will be awarded.

Prospects: One, maybe two top spots.

TUG OF WAR

The ladies of Taiwan’s tug of war team represent the nation’s only nailed-on gold medal. They are reigning World Games champions in the 520kg category and also won gold in the 480kg and 520kg divisions at last year’s World Indoor championships in Italy.

Prospects: Anything less than gold would be a major disappointment.
