Orlando Hudson hit a three-run double in the first innings to set the tone early for the Major League-leading Los Angeles Dodgers in their 11-2 thrashing of the New York Mets on Thursday.
The Dodgers (54-31) scored four times in the first inning, while Rafael Furcal recorded three hits and three runs and Matt Kemp tallied three of the team’s 17 hits.

New York pitcher Livan Hernandez lasted just four innings and gave up eight runs. Dodgers left-hander Randy Wolf (4-3) earned the victory, striking out three batters in 6 1-3 innings.
It was the first victory in eight starts for Wolf, who has 12 no decisions this season and switched his uniform number from 21 to 43 in an effort to change his luck. He wore 43 during a successful tenure with the Philadelphia Phillies.
“There’s not a baseball player who isn’t superstitious. I’m happy I changed numbers. We put up 11 runs. I’ll take it,” Wolf said.
The Mets managed two runs against Wolf, including an RBI single in the first inning for Gary Sheffield, who finished 2-for-4.
New York (40-44), however, lost for the 10th time in 13 games and have struggled offensively without the injured Carlos Beltran (knee), Carlos Delgado (hip) and Jose Reyes (hamstring).
Delgado and Reyes have been missing since May, while Beltran has been sidelined since June 22, sending New York into a hitting slump.
Mets All-Star third baseman David Wright had two hits for the second successive day. Prior to Wednesday’s game Wright had hit just 1-for-23 this month.
Los Angeles’ Manny Ramirez finished 2-for-2 with two RBI singles before being replaced in the bottom of the seventh. Ramirez is 6-for-18 with two homers since returning on July 3 from a 50-game suspension for testing positive to a banned drug.
“I feel great. But I’m not 23 anymore,” Ramirez said. “I’ve got to go baby steps.”
PHILLIES 9, REDS 6
At Philadelphia, Jayson Werth homered for the fourth straight game and Chase Utley hit an inside-the-park homer in the Phillies’ win.
Jamie Moyer (8-6) allowed six runs and eight hits in five innings, but Philadelphia’s offense bailed him out again. The Phillies have averaged 8.1 runs in Moyer’s wins.
Werth went deep in the sixth for his seventh homer in 12 games.

In Phoenix, Pinch-hitter Brett Carroll’s three-run homer sparked a franchise-record 10-run eighth inning, helping Florida come back from a seven-run deficit to beat Arizona 14-7 on Thursday night.
Florida matched the team record for the biggest comeback victory and Arizona set a club record for the largest blown lead.
Florida trailed 7-0 after five innings but rallied with three runs in the sixth and one in the seventh. Then the Marlins hit Arizona with the 10-spot in the eighth to make a winner of Kiko Calero (2-0).
The Marlins sent 14 batters to the plate in the eighth against three relievers — Juan Gutierrez, Scott Schoeneweis (1-1) and Blaine Boyer.
Carroll’s homer off Schoeneweis gave Florida an 8-7 lead. Dan Uggla, Cody Ross and Jeremy Hermida followed with RBI singles, and John Baker drove in a run with a double. Another run scored on a passed ball, and the final run came in on Russ Gload’s second fielder’s choice grounder of the inning.

US track and field athletes have about four dozen pieces to choose from when assembling their uniforms at the Olympics. The one grabbing the most attention is a high-cut leotard that barely covers the bikini line and has triggered debate between those who think it is sexist and others who say they do not need the Internet to make sure they have good uniforms. Among those critical or laughing at the uniforms included Paralympian Femita Ayanbeku, sprinter Britton Wilson and even athletes from other countries such as Britain’s Abigail Irozuru, who wrote on social media: “Was ANY female athlete consulted in
Four-time NBA all-star DeMarcus Cousins arrived in Taiwan with his family early yesterday to finish his renewed contract with the Taiwan Beer Leopards in the T1 League. Cousins initially played a four-game contract with the Leopards in January. On March 18, the Taoyuan-based team announced that Cousins had renewed his contract. “Hi what’s up Leopard fans, I’m back. I’m excited to be back and can’t wait to join the team,” Cousins said in a video posted on the Leopard’s Facebook page. “Most of all, can’t wait to see you guys, the fans, next weekend. So make sure you come out and support the Beer
Former US Masters champion Zach Johnson was left embarrassed after a foul-mouthed response to ironic cheers from spectators after a triple bogey at Augusta National on Friday. Johnson, the 2007 Masters winner, missed the cut after his three-over-par round of 75 left him on seven-over 151 for 36 holes, his six on the par-three 12th playing a big role in his downfall. Television footage showed Johnson reacting to sarcastic cheers and applause when he tapped in for the triple bogey by yelling: “Oh fuck off.” Such a response would be considered bad form in any golf tournament, but is particularly out of keeping
The sacred flame for the Paris Olympics was lit yesterday in Olympia, Greece, the birthplace of the ancient Games, in a ceremony inspired by antiquity and marked by messages of hope amid multiple global crises. “In ancient times, the Olympic Games brought together the Greek city states, even — and in particular — during times of war and conflict,” International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach said. “Today, the Olympic Games are the only event that brings the entire world together in peaceful competition. Then as now, the Olympic athletes are sending this powerful message — yes, it is possible to compete fiercely
