Oakland rookie Brett Anderson held the Boston Red Sox to two hits over nine innings on Monday, leading the Athletics to a 6-0 win over the American League East leaders.
The left-hander allowed only singles to Jason Bay in the second inning and Nick Green in the fifth on his way to pitching Oakland’s first complete game in a year.
“He had a powerful fastball, a real good slider and he attacked the strike zone with both pitches and pretty much carved us up,” Red Sox manager Terry Francona told reporters.
Anderson (5-7) struck out a career-best nine and walked two as the Athletics stopped the Red Sox from padding their slender lead in the AL East over the New York Yankees.
The Athletics, the worst hitting team in the league, collected 15 hits and chased Boston starter John Smoltz (0-2) after six innings. He gave up 10 hits and five runs.
Oakland scored four runs in the fourth inning and added single tallies in the sixth and ninth.
Mark Ellis delivered a two-run double in the fourth and Adam Kennedy singled in solo runs in the fourth and sixth. Orlando Cabrera added a ninth-inning homer.
Former Boston player Nomar Garciaparra, in his first game back at Fenway Park since being traded to the Cubs in 2004, drove in Oakland’s initial run in the fourth and had two hits.
He received a standing ovation from Boston fans before his first at-bat.
“It looked like it really touched him,” Francona said. “They’re crazy fans, but they’re so wrapped up, emotionally, in their team and people that have been a part of their teams.”
Garciaparra, who played in Boston for eight seasons, said he owed Anderson a treat for his role in making the return special.
“I can’t wait to take him out to dinner and thank him for making tonight so much better,” Garciaparra said.

Russell Branyan hit his 21st homer, Chris Woodward doubled in two runs and Ichiro Suzuki had an RBI single for Seattle.
Washburn recorded the first one-hitter by a Mariner at Safeco Field and 10th in franchise history.

Revelations of positive doping tests for nearly two dozen Chinese swimmers that went unpunished sparked an intense flurry of accusations and legal threats between the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the head of the US drug-fighting organization, who has long been one of WADA’s fiercest critics. WADA on Saturday said it was turning to legal counsel to address a statement released by US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) CEO Travis Tygart, who said WADA and anti-doping authorities in China swept positive tests “under the carpet by failing to fairly and evenly follow the global rules that apply to everyone else in the world.” The
Taiwanese judoka Yang Yung-wei on Saturday won silver in the men’s under-60kg category at the Asian Judo Championships in Hong Kong. Nicknamed the “judo heartthrob” in Taiwan, the Olympic silver-medalist missed out on his first Asian Championships gold when he lost to Japanese judoka Taiki Nakamura in the finals. Yang defeated three opponents on Saturday to reach the final after receiving a bye through the round of 32. He first topped Laotian Soukphaxay Sithisane in the round of 16 with two seoi nage (over-the-shoulder throws), then ousted Indian Vijay Kumar Yadav in the quarter-finals with his signature ude hishigi sankaku gatame (triangular armlock). Rafael Nadal on Wednesday said the upcoming French Open would be the moment to “give everything and die” on the court after his comeback from injury in Barcelona was curtailed by Alex de Minaur. The 22-time Grand Slam title winner, back playing this week after three months on the sidelines, battled well, but eventually crumbled 7-5, 6-1 against the world No. 11 from Australia in the second round. Nadal, 37, who missed virtually all of last season, is hoping to compete at the French Open next month where he is the record 14-time champion. The Spaniard said the clash with De Minaur was
