Wang a dad as wife delivers just in time for Father’s Day

Just in time for Father’s Day in the US, which falls on June 21 this year, the New York Yankees’ star Taiwanese pitcher Wang Chien-min (王建民) and his wife, Wu Chia-ling (吳嘉玲), had a 3.5kg baby boy yesterday.

The couple, who have been married for five years, named their son Justin Jesse Wang.

Wang was at practice yesterday morning when he was informed that his wife was about to go into labor. After learning the news, Wang immediately asked the team for leave and went straight to the hospital. He was with his wife in the delivery room throughout the whole birth. Both the mother and baby were in good health after the delivery.

While the child was given the English name “Justin Jesse,” his Chinese name is still being discussed.

Yankee beat writer Peter Abraham said Justin Jesse is a good name, adding that J.J. Wang sounded like a name for a shortstop.

However, Wang, 29, said he did not want his son to follow in his footsteps.

The pitcher said he just hoped Justin would grow up as an honest and upright man.

The New York Yankees play the Washington Nationals at Yankee Stadium today in a game that could determine whether Wang will remain starting pitcher.

Wang said he appreciated the good wishes he had received for his newborn son from everybody and that he would try his best to prepare for today’s game to win his first victory for the season.

Wang has struggled this season following his return to action after a long-term injury.

He suffered a partially torn tendon and sprained right foot incurred running the bases during the Yankees’ 13-0 interleague win against the Houston Astros on June 15 last year.
