Yankees chief operating officer Lonn Trost said this week that the team planned further studies on what effect the wind is having in the new stadium and what may occur when the old ballpark is torn down, probably starting next month.
In the meantime, pitchers must adapt to the stadium’s vagaries. Through Wednesday, the Yankees’ staff had a league-high 5.78 earned-run average and allowed 45 homers, third-most in the majors.
The homer barrage may not abate this weekend. The Twins had a staff ERA of 5.20, 25th out of 30 teams, and allowed 44 home runs through Wednesday.
“The ability to adapt is going to be stronger for pitchers than hitters, so that will bring [the home runs] down,” said Wright, who projects 180 to 190 homers for the season, up from 160 last year. “I think this will calm down. There’s a long way to go to get a feel of how it’s really going to play.”
