The Boston Bruins and Anaheim Ducks forced deciding Game Sevens in their NHL conference semi-finals with pulsating victories on Tuesday.
The visiting Bruins recorded a 4-2 win over the Carolina Hurricanes in Raleigh before the Ducks edged the Detroit Red Wings 2-1 in Anaheim. The deciding games will be in Detroit and Boston today.
The Detroit-Anaheim winner will take on the Chicago Blackhawks in the Western Conference finals with the winner of Boston-Carolina playing the winner of yesterday’s Game Seven in Washington between the Capitals and the Pittsburgh Penguins.

“Getting to Game Seven is one thing,” Boston coach Claude Julien said. “Now we need to decide what we’re going to do with it.”
Boston slotted two goals past Carolina netminder Cam Ward in the first five minutes and added two more in the second for a 4-1 advantage.
Netminder Tim Thomas stopped 31 shots, including 13 in the third period for the victory.
“Goaltending is such a team dependent position and over the past two games we’ve really stepped up our games,” Thomas said. “[But] I had to hold up my end of the bargain more tonight than the last game at home.”
Mark Recchi and Steve Montador opened the Bruins’ scoring, Recchi tallying after 2:01 and Montador finding net three minutes later.
The Hurricanes, who had taken just one shot by the time Montador scored, pulled one goal back on Matt Cullen’s score early in the second.
“We thought at 2-1 we were there,” Carolina coach Paul Maurice said.
“We just didn’t move the puck the way I think we’re going to need to,” Maurice added.
Boston’s Marc Savard restored the two-goal advantage 8:53 into the period and Chuck Kobasew made it 4-1 with less than two minutes remaining in the period.
Savard left with a knee injury after a collision with Carolina’s Chad LaRose, but is expected to be available on Thursday.

In Anaheim, the Ducks’ Jonas Hiller made 38 saves, while Ryan Getzlaf had a goal and an assist on Corey Perry’s tally for Anaheim in the second period to keep the Stanley Cup champions’ hopes alive.
Hiller, who made 17 saves in the third period, lost his shutout with less than three minutes to play when Johan Franzen deflected in a shot on a power play.
“I think everybody knew what today’s game was about,” Hiller told reporters. “We had to win and we had to show a better effort than the last two games. That is what we did and why we won.”
US track and field athletes have about four dozen pieces to choose from when assembling their uniforms at the Olympics. The one grabbing the most attention is a high-cut leotard that barely covers the bikini line and has triggered debate between those who think it is sexist and others who say they do not need the Internet to make sure they have good uniforms. Among those critical or laughing at the uniforms included Paralympian Femita Ayanbeku, sprinter Britton Wilson and even athletes from other countries such as Britain’s Abigail Irozuru, who wrote on social media: “Was ANY female athlete consulted in
Four-time NBA all-star DeMarcus Cousins arrived in Taiwan with his family early yesterday to finish his renewed contract with the Taiwan Beer Leopards in the T1 League. Cousins initially played a four-game contract with the Leopards in January. On March 18, the Taoyuan-based team announced that Cousins had renewed his contract. “Hi what’s up Leopard fans, I’m back. I’m excited to be back and can’t wait to join the team,” Cousins said in a video posted on the Leopard’s Facebook page. “Most of all, can’t wait to see you guys, the fans, next weekend. So make sure you come out and support the Beer
Former US Masters champion Zach Johnson was left embarrassed after a foul-mouthed response to ironic cheers from spectators after a triple bogey at Augusta National on Friday. Johnson, the 2007 Masters winner, missed the cut after his three-over-par round of 75 left him on seven-over 151 for 36 holes, his six on the par-three 12th playing a big role in his downfall. Television footage showed Johnson reacting to sarcastic cheers and applause when he tapped in for the triple bogey by yelling: “Oh fuck off.” Such a response would be considered bad form in any golf tournament, but is particularly out of keeping
The sacred flame for the Paris Olympics was lit yesterday in Olympia, Greece, the birthplace of the ancient Games, in a ceremony inspired by antiquity and marked by messages of hope amid multiple global crises. “In ancient times, the Olympic Games brought together the Greek city states, even — and in particular — during times of war and conflict,” International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach said. “Today, the Olympic Games are the only event that brings the entire world together in peaceful competition. Then as now, the Olympic athletes are sending this powerful message — yes, it is possible to compete fiercely
