The Wellington Hurricanes underlined their Super 14 title credentials with a spectacular win over the Auckland Blues yesterday.
The result ensures the Hurricanes will stay at the top of the table with another two rounds remaining, but makes a semi-final berth a distant prospect for the Blues, who were fifth at the start of the weekend.
The Hurricanes blitzed their way to five first half tries and although the Blues had the better of the second spell, they could not make up the 35-13 half time deficit.
Despite the important win at the business end of the season, captain Rodney So’oialo expressed frustration the Hurricanes were not able to impose more control over the game.
“We scored the five points, but it was pretty unstructured and the boys were actually quite disappointed with the way that they went,” he said. “We sort of played into the Blues’ hands.”
The Blues again revealed the defensive weaknesses which undermine the attacking flair brilliantly demonstrated by winger Rene Ranger, who scored a try and repeatedly breached the Hurricane’s defense.
Lock Ali Williams limped off in the 17th minute with an Achilles tendon injury, which was a worry for All Blacks coach Graham Henry ahead of Tests against France and Italy next month.
The breakneck first half saw the Hurricanes require only 22 minutes to secure their bonus point for four tries.
The Blues scored two of their own but were 22 points in arrears at the break, despite enjoying a dominance in both territory and possession which continued in the second spell.
The Blues opened the scoring in the third minute with a Jimmy Gopperth conversion but a dominant Hurricanes pack helped set up tries for Conrad Smith, Scott Waldrom, Ma’a Nonu and fullback Tamati Ellison, who touched down twice.
Winger Joe Rokocoko scored the Blues’ first midway through the spell and outside centre Anthony Tuitavake kept them in the game by going over in the corner four minutes from half time.
Two minutes into the new spell, Ranger narrowed the gap to 15 points, scoring a try after Isaia Toeava broke through the defensive line just after the kickoff.
But the Hurricanes’ most potent attacking weapon Ma’a Nonu restored the half-time margin to 22 points with a characteristic bulldozing try, which flyhalf Willie Ripia capped with his sixth straight conversion.
Blues replacement flanker Dean Budd ensured a bonus point for the defeated side, crossing in the final minute of the match.
Revelations of positive doping tests for nearly two dozen Chinese swimmers that went unpunished sparked an intense flurry of accusations and legal threats between the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the head of the US drug-fighting organization, who has long been one of WADA’s fiercest critics. WADA on Saturday said it was turning to legal counsel to address a statement released by US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) CEO Travis Tygart, who said WADA and anti-doping authorities in China swept positive tests “under the carpet by failing to fairly and evenly follow the global rules that apply to everyone else in the world.” The
Taiwanese judoka Yang Yung-wei on Saturday won silver in the men’s under-60kg category at the Asian Judo Championships in Hong Kong. Nicknamed the “judo heartthrob” in Taiwan, the Olympic silver-medalist missed out on his first Asian Championships gold when he lost to Japanese judoka Taiki Nakamura in the finals. Yang defeated three opponents on Saturday to reach the final after receiving a bye through the round of 32. He first topped Laotian Soukphaxay Sithisane in the round of 16 with two seoi nage (over-the-shoulder throws), then ousted Indian Vijay Kumar Yadav in the quarter-finals with his signature ude hishigi sankaku gatame (triangular armlock). Taiwanese gymnast Lee Chih-kai failed to secure an Olympic berth in the pommel horse following a second-place finish at the last qualifier in Doha on Friday, a performance that Lee and his coach called “unconvincing.” The Tokyo Olympics silver medalist finished runner-up in the final after scoring 6.6 for degree of difficulty and 8.800 for execution for a combined score of 15.400. That was just 0.100 short of Jordan’s Ahmad Abu Al Soud, who had qualified for the event in Paris before the Apparatus World Cup series in Qatar’s capital. After missing the final rounds in the first two of four qualifier
