Miyabiyama and Dejima maintain lead in Fukuoka

Mongolian yokozuna Hakuho overpowered Kotoshogiku yesterday to stay within one win of co-leaders Dejima and Miyabiyama at the Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament.

Hakuho, who is bidding for his ninth Emperor’s Cup, forced out third-ranked maegashira Kotoshogiku (3-3) in the day’s final bout to improve to 5-1.

It was Hakuho’s fifth-straight win after an opening-day loss to Aminishiki.

Lower-ranked wrestlers Dejima and Miyabiyama stayed in the lead and maintained perfect 6-0 records in the 15-day tournament by winning earlier bouts.

Fifth-ranked maegashira Dejima defeated No. 7 maegashira Tochinonada while Miyabiyama, a seventh-ranked maegashira, overpowered ninth-ranked Tochiozan.

In other major bouts, Mongolian sekiwake Ama, who is bidding for promotion to sumo’s second-highest rank of ozeki, forced out fourth-ranked maegashira Tochinoshin (1-5) to improve to 4-2.

Bulgarian ozeki Kotooshu overpowered third-ranked Hokutoriki (1-5) to post his third win against three losses.
