Top-seeded Richard Gasquet defeated Oscar Hernandez of Spain 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 on Tuesday in the first round of the BCR Open Romania.
Meanwhile defending champion Gilles Simon of France easily beat Evgeny Korolev of Russia 6-1, 6-2.
Teimuraz Gabashvili of Russia defeated Ernests Gulbis of Latvia 6-2, 2-6, 6-4, while Carlos Moya beat Alberto Martin 6-4, 6-7 (4), 6-4 in an all-Spanish match.
Victor Crivoi of Romania defeated Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo of Spain 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, and another Romanian, Victor Hanescu, lost to Martin Vassallo Arguello of Argentina 4-6, 7-5, 6-4.
Also, Nicolas Almagro of Spain defeated Somdev Devvarman of India 6-7, 6-2, 7-5, while Jose Acasuso beat fellow Argentine Diego Junqueira 6-2, 6-4.
