Turks' great escape knocks Czechs out

TURKISH DELIGHT Turkey coach Fatih Terim told fans to take to the streets to celebrate his side's victory, while Czech keeper Petr Cech was left with egg on his face

Zdenek Grygera whipped in a cross, Koller rose highest, and although Demirel palmed the ball onto the underpart of the cross bar, it flipped into the net.

It was no more than the Czechs deserved and Bruckner must have wondered why his side were not more than 1-0 up at the half-time break.

As the rain poured down at the start of the second-half, Turkey stepped up their attack with Kahveci twice going close, but Cech was solid in the Czech goal.

The Czechs looked to have sealed the match when they took a 2-0 lead as Plasil hit a bullet strike, using the wet turf brilliantly to slide onto Libor Sionko’s cross on 62 minutes which gave Demirel no chance.

But Turkey showed fighting spirit and deserved to pull a goal back after laying siege to the Czech goal as winger Halil Altintop slid in a cross and Turan rifled his shot home.

And a mistake by Cech put Turkey back in the tie when Kahveci pounced on the blunder with just three minutes left.

Cech blamed the slippery ball in wet conditions for his error which led to the second goal.

“It’s just one of those things,” he said. “Everybody makes mistakes and I am a human being.

“I tried my best but there was a lot of water on the ball and it slipped from my grasp,” he said.
