Sweden’s Nilsson on course for St Omer Open victory

Sweden’s Christian Nilsson stayed on course for victory in the St. Omer Open on Saturday when a third round one-under 70 preserved his two-shot lead.

Nilsson, who equaled the course record with a seven-under 64 on Friday, leads Englishman Robert Coles and Francois Delamontagne of France, but his advantage could have been bigger had he not double-bogeyed the 17th hole.

The 29-year-old had not dropped a shot for 34 holes until the par-three 17th ended that run, but he finished on a high with a birdie at the last to sit four-under going into the final round.

“I was really happy to finish like that after what happened on the 17th,” said Nilsson, who is chasing his first European Tour win.

“I had a long, tough putt, which I over-hit and had to chip back, but I needed to let it go, forget about it and I did,” he said.

Coles, who posted his best round of the season with a 66, carded five birdies on the front nine.
