European diplomats to find out whether they can still kick it

By Dave Carroll  /  STAFF REPORTER

Last weekend the kids held a Euro 2008 soccer tournament in Taipei; tomorrow the diplomats get in on the action.

At noon 10 five-a-side teams will commence battle indoors at the Taipei Municipal Chengde Elementary School in Nangang District in the Euro 2008 International 5’s competition.

Sponsored by the Trade Office of Swiss Industries and the Austrian Tourism Office and put together by Taipei’s Master Football Academy, the competition will feature teams from nine of the European representative offices in Taipei, with a team from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs representing the host nation.

There will be two groups of five teams, with the round-robin group matches lasting 12 minutes each. The winners of each group will compete in the final at around 5:15pm, which will last 15 minutes.

Group A will be between Finland, the hosts Taiwan, Euro 2008 co-hosts Austria, France and the home of the world champions, Italy. Battling it out in Group B will be the UK, their arch-rivals Germany, Euro 2008 co-hosts Switzerland, the Netherlands and Russia.

There will be a prize draw which will include flights to Europe, and all proceeds will go to local charities. There are no side events, but anybody who enjoys their soccer is welcome to go and enjoy the tournament tomorrow.
