Baggies down Wolves, return to top of league

West Bromwich Albion returned to the top of English soccer¡¦s second tier Championship after Zoltan Gera¡¦s goal sealed a 1-0 win away to Midlands rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the day¡¦s other Championship clash saw Hull City move into the second automatic promotion spot to the lucrative Premier League for the first time this season after a 3-1 victory away to Barnsley.

    TWO POINTS CLEAR

The results meant West Brom, beaten in the FA Cup semi-finals by Portsmouth, went two points clear at the top of the table with three matches of the regular season left.

Hull, who have never played in English soccer¡¦s top flight in their 104-year history, moved second on goal difference, ahead of Stoke City.

    ONLY GOAL

Gera, who had seen a first-half header at Molineux come back off the woodwork, settled the match in the 59th minute after veteran striker Kevin Phillips had slid the ball across the six-yard box.

Hull, meanwhile, halted beaten FA Cup semi-finalists Barnsley¡¦s recent climb away from the relegation zone with their fifth win in six games.

    HULL DOWN BARNSLEY

Dean Marney opened the scoring in the 24th minute from the penalty spot after Frazier Campbell had been fouled by Dennis Souza. Marney then set-up Ian Ashbee for Hull¡¦s second in the 52nd minute before veteran striker Dean Windass, on as a substitute, scored with his first touch seven minutes from time to take his tally for the season to 13 goals.
