    MLB: Tigers beat Red Sox, snap seven-game losing run

    The Detroit Tigers won their first game of the season on Wednesday, beating the Boston Red Sox 7-2 at Fenway Park to snap a streak of seven consecutive losses to start the season.

    One of the American League pre-season favorites after bolstering their lineup with Miguel Cabrera, Dontrelle Willis and Edgar Renteria, the Tigers were the last Major League team to record a win.

    The Tigers scored just 15 runs in their first seven games despite having the second-highest payroll in baseball, behind the New York Yankees.

    ¡§There¡¦s a lot of games left,¡¨ a relieved Detroit manager Jim Leyland told reporters. ¡§It¡¦s a 162-game season. That¡¦s a fact. We finally got some timely hits. That¡¦s more like us.¡¨

    The win eased Detroit¡¦s nerves about a repeat of the 2003 season, which they started 0-9 and finished up 43-119.

    Marcus Thames and Carlos Guillen homered, Edgar Renteria had three hits and Ivan Rodriguez got the 2,500th hit of his career.

    Still, no team has made the postseason after an 0-7 start.

    Jeremy Bonderman pitched five innings for the win, giving up two runs ¡X one earned ¡X on five hits with two strikeouts.

    Jon Lester allowed four runs over five innings and took the loss for Boston.

    Royals 4, Yankees 0

    At Kansas City, Missouri, Zack Greinke threw eight scoreless innings, and Kansas City won a second straight game from New York for the first time since sweeping a three-game series in 2005 at Kauffman Stadium.

    Greinke (2-0) gave up six hits, walked two and struck out two, lowering his ERA to 0.60.

    Twins 12, White Sox 5

    At Chicago, Jason Kubel hit a grand slam and drove in six runs, and Minnesota¡¦s 12 runs were its most since beating Chicago 20-14 and 12-0 on July 6, 2007.

    Angels 9, Indians 5

    At Anaheim, California, Mike Napoli hit his first career grand slam, a second-inning drive, and Garret Anderson, Casey Kotchman and Vladimir Guerrero also homered for Los Angeles.

    Athletics 6, Blue Jays 3

    At Toronto, Mark Ellis had four hits, including the tying triple in the ninth, then scored the go-ahead run in Oakland¡¦s win over Toronto. Ellis went 4-for-5 with two stolen bases.

    Mariners 7, Rays 1

    At St. Petersburg, Florida, Jarrod Washburn (1-1) allowed one run in seven innings, and Jamie Burke hit a three-run homer to lead Seattle.

    Mike Pelfrey gave New York¡¦s injury-riddled pitching staff an encouraging boost, leading the Mets to an 8-2 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday.

    The Phillies played a painfully sloppy game without injured MVP shortstop Jimmy Rollins, committing four errors that led to six unearned runs.

    The Mets ended a nine-game losing streak to Philadelphia.

    In Phoenix, Arizona stretched its winning streak to six games by edging Los Angeles.

    In Washington, Mike Jacobs hit two homers to help Florida to a 10-4 win over Washington and the best record in the National League East division.

    In Denver, Colorado put up its highest run total of the young season to beat Atlanta and win its third straight.

    Cubs 6, Pirates 4, 15 innings


    In Pittsburgh, Felix Pie¡¦s two-run single in the 15th inning saw Chicago outlast Pittsburgh in the second extra-inning game in a row between the teams.

    Cardinals 6, Astros 4

    In Houston, Albert Pujols hit his first two homers of the year and St. Louis beat Houston.

    Reds 12, Brewers 4

    In Milwaukee, Cincinnati scored 10 straight runs in a victory over the Milwaukee Brewers.
