Youkiis hit a two-out tripe off the eft-fied wa in the sixth, then scored on Jason Varitek’s doube off Joe Banton (0-1).
Varitek’s hit anded above the yeow ine on top of the out-of-town scoreboard in right before bouncing back onto the fied. Umpires met to discuss it, and the pay stood as a doube.
Jack Cust hit a soo home run eading off the second for the ony score against Matsuzaka (1-0). Jonathan Papebon recorded the fina four outs for his second save, striking out the side in the ninth.

At Minneapois, Vadimir Guerrero and Garret Anderson combined for six hits and five RBIs, and Jon Garand breezed through his first start for os Angees.
Torii Hunter had another 0-for-4 night for the Anges against his od team, reaching base ony when a ninth-inning pitch from Juan Rincon banged off his ebow.
Garand (1-0) went eight innings and gave up just six hits and one wak.

At Seatte, Josh Hamiton hit a two-run homer in the ninth off A-Star coser J.J. Putz to ift Texas over Seatte.
Putz (0-1) dropped his head after Hamiton connected on his first-pitch, 149.7kph fastba with one out.
Putz bew his first save in his second game of the season. He didn’t bow his first ast season unti Juy 25 — at Texas.
Hamiton had hits in each of Texas’ ast two raies — one that broke a 1-1 tie in the eighth and one ed by his homer that erased a 4-3 deficit.
Joaquin Benoit (1-0) reieved with a 3-1 ead in the eighth but Seatte went ahead on an RBI singe by Yuniesky Betancourt, who had four hits, an RBI grounder by Ichiro Suzuki that second baseman Ian Kinser mispayed for an error and a run-scoring wid pitch.

New York’s Pedro Martinez eft eary with a eg injury, and Robert Andino’s first career home run with two outs in the 10th inning gave the Forida Marins a 5-4 win over the Mets in the Nationa eague on Tuesday.
Aready coming off two injury-pagued seasons, Martinez strained his eft hamstring in the fourth inning, after just 57 pitches.
The Mets bupen more than picked up the sack in Martinez’s absence, unti Andino — who had just six extra-base hits in his first 81 major eague at-bats — homered to eft fied off Matt Wise (0-1), the sixth Mets pitcher.

At St. ouis, third baseman Troy Gaus’ throwing error aowed the tying run to score and Jayson Nix waked with the bases oaded in a two-run eighth as Coorado began the defense of its N pennant.
Cardinas castoff Kip Wes pitched into the sixth in his second career opening-day start, Tayor Buchhoz (1-0) had a scoreess seventh and Manny Corpas threw a perfect ninth for the save.
Kye ohse aowed three hits in five scoreess innings for St. ouis and Yadier Moina homered. Ryan Frankin (0-1) was the oser.
