Ho Sho-cheng's put-back basket with less than eight seconds remaining won the game for Taiwan Beer as they overcame the Dacin Tigers 92-91 at the Taipei County Sports Complex on Sunday evening.
The versatile forward, who is known more for his three-point shooting than his force inside the paint, came up big to help Taiwan Beer secure their third win in a row.
"It's all about being at the right place at the night time. It could have been anyone on the team and I just happened to be the guy tonight," Ho said afterwards.
His winning bucket not only kept Taiwan Beer on a roll, but also avoided what would have been an embarrassing loss to a shorthanded Dacin squad missing four regular starters.
The game began with the Tigers ripping through the beer crew's defense to take a surprising 33-22 lead.
Taiwan Beer improved their defense and gave up just 17 points in the second quarter, but the Tigers still enjoyed a nine-point advantage thanks to their own tenacious defense.
Taiwan Beer began the second half trying to punch the ball inside the paint with the "Twin Towers" -- Ha Hsiao-yuan and Hsu Cheng-wen. The strategy worked quite well as it forced the Dacin defense to retreat, freeing up the perimeter for Taiwan Beer. Heading into the final quarter, the deficit had been reduced to a point.
The seesaw battle continued until the final minute, setting the stage for Ho's telling strike.
Numen 90, Bank of Taiwan 86
The dmedia Numen needed a pair of free-throws by Ouyang Jing-hen with 1 second left on the clock to seal a 90-86 win against Bank of Taiwan on Sunday.
The win kept the Numen in joint second with Taiwan Beer, with each team having to play one more game before the regular season concludes next weekend.
Should both teams win their remaining games, second place will go to the Numen who have beaten Taiwan Beer three of the five times they have played this season.
In Sunday's game, Dmedia led 20-16 after the first quarter before the Bank of Taiwan came back to take a 41-36 lead at the half.
The Numen regained their poise during the third quarter -- Jonathan Sanders leading the way with 14 points -- to lead 74-67.
And although the bankers refused to lie down and die, the Numen maintained their edge until the buzzer.
